Lions trip in 2013

Hello! I'm at the very early planning stage of a trip out to Australia for the British Lions trip next year. Looking to spend about 4 or 5 nights in Melbourne with one (possibly two) teenage son(s).

Obviously, one day will be devoted to the rugby - but what's feasible for the rest of our time there? I'd like to do the Great Ocean Road, but what else will we be able to fit in? It'll be winter, so spending time on the beach isn't really in my plans - but I wouldn't mind a winery visit!

Also, any advice on good areas in which to look for a hotel or B&B would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

If you are coming all this way for the rugby, you must enjoy your sport. Are you also cricket fans? If so, I highly recommend a tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the National Sports Museum (located at the MCG). Allow at least half a day to do both.

hi there,

winery trips are definitely feasible in the short time you're here. the Yarra Valley is only a short journey out of Melbourne CBD. there are many small tour operators who arrange half day and one day winery tours that include tastings, lunch etc. simply google yarra valley winery tours and a whole list will come up!

being winter, staying indoors most of the time will ultimately end up happening, so if you like art take a visit to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). There are two locations within a 5min walk of each other. For indigenous art visit the NGV at Federation Square. For classic, contemporary and modern art visit the NGV International on St Kilda Road. Both locations have great cafes and restaurants to unwind at as well.

You can also visit the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) also located at Federation Square. Showcasing a history of film, tv, internet and cinema collection.

As for the pub scene - you'll find many of the pubs in Melbourne are packed in the winter time. Live music is also quite popular at many venues. Visit a website such as www.melbournegigs.com.au/live_music.php for listings.

For hotels - depends on your budget really. Upmarket hotels such as the Grand Hyatt, Hilton etc are all located within the CBD. Mid range hotels such as Travelodge and Quest are located a short walk or tram ride from the CBD in areas like Southbank and Docklands. Of the two areas, Southbank is a better location re. proximity to cafes, restaurants and the arts, but the Docklands is located next to one of the main football grounds - Etihad Stadium.

Enjoy your trip!

Have you been able to get tickets? We've had a few similar posts on the Sydney forum over the past few months & the general opinion is that unless you are part of a tour group tickets to Lions games are very difficult to get.

There is also fireworks at Docklands every Friday night in July as a part of their Winter theme. Maybe you can have a meal out there and enjoy the fireworks too? Happy travels.

Go to an Australian rules football game at the MCG or Etihad stadium. A few hours at Queen Victoria market (mostly undercover) can be good if you're looking for souvenirs, and cheap clothes (knock -off labels, etc), Some good food available there and in nearby restaurants. Easy to get to by tram. The boys in particular might enjoy Scienceworks in Spotswood - take a train or ferry. If the weather is OK you can hire bikes and cycle along the Yarra River in Melbourne. If the weather is poor the boys might enjoy Laser Skirmish at Southbank (and you could go into the Casino/shopping while they play), Medibank Icehouse (iceskating, etc) or the IMAX theater at Melbourne Museu, which shows some excellent 3D movies. There a tours that combine wineries with Healesville Sanctuary (Australian animals, etc). Winter will be cold but just rug-up and you'll be fine. It is likely to rain at some stage so always pays to have some 'back-up' indoor activities planned.

The prices are out for the big companies ie Gullivers and The Official Lions - it looks as if we can only make 2 tests ie 1st and 2nd and not sure if to go via Sydney and have a couple of days there but do as much as possible. Any info Penglais would be really helpful.
