9 hour stopover in Melbourne

Hello,

I will fly from Jakarta to Townsville on next Monday, but I have to stopover in Melbourne for 9 hours -__- lame, i know,.. Will be arrived in Melbourne at 6:45 am (Tuesday) and my next flights to Townsville is at 4:00 pm. It's winter over there, right? Do you have any idea about where I could be going? Is there any airport lounge? I perhaps choose not to go outside the airport because it will be too cold, i suppose. I havent been in aussie yet. What can I do at Melbourne airport?

Your answers are appreciated :) Thanks heaps!

Yes, it's definately winter!! The highest temperature this week is 15 degrees. Next Tuesday's weather is expected to be a maximum 15 degrees (a heat wave compared to what we have had, lol) and scattered showers.

All be it a good airport, Melbourne airport is not that good that I would recommend anyone stay there for a period of 9 hours. You are best catching the Skybus into the city and walking around the shops. Yes, you will be cold whilst outdoors, but I think it's better than staying at the airport for 9 hours and also, stay in doors as much as possible.

Explore some of the lanes and get something to eat.

Totally agree! Unless you have access to one of the airline lounges 9 hours at Melbourne airport would be a nightmare.

Either check in your luggage early or put luggage in storage at the airport and as Navy suggests go into the city and have a look around the city. You can certainly stay out of the cold. Stay indoors, take a ride on the free city circle tram or the free tourist shuttle. You could visit one of the museums, go to a movie, have a nice lunch. Lots to keep you entertained. The trip into the city takes about 20-30 minutes.

Unluckily I have no access to any airport lounges..

Oh, is it possible to put my luggage in storage at the airport? I didn't know there is such facilities.. Does it cost ? How much? Or, is it possible for me to do early check in and early luggage drop? I will fly using Jetstar.

Another question, I will be arrived in Terminal 2 (Inernational), how can i get to Terminal 1 (domestic) from T2? Is there any skytrain just like in Changi?

SmartCarte the luggage storage facility is in the arrivals area of T2 (Virgin end) If you Google them they will have info about rates. You would have to ask Jetstar how early you can check in but I suspect it's 3 hours before the flight.

No trains between terminals. T1,T2 & T3 are all in the same building. You don't even have to go outside. From the arrivals hall go up one level. Jetstar is to the left of International as you face the street.

If you are calling from a pay phone in Australia you leave off the +61 and put a 0 in front of the 4.

Thanks for such a useful information :)

I still have something to ask, hehe. Do I need to pay airport tax for my domestic flights from MEL to TSV? How does it cost?

As I mentioned, I will fly using Jetstar, and in their Tax Invoice I don't see any informations about airport tax..

Airport tax should have been included in the cost of your ticket. Ive never heard of anyone having to pay extra airport tax here since it has been included in the ticket price for well over 10 years.

Make sure you have a warm jacket to go outside.

If you will go into the city, you buy the Skybus tickets on the bottom (street level) floor outside the Virgin domestic terminal. As a solo traveller this is a cheaper return ticket than catching a taxi, but if you have someone with you it may be more economical to catch a taxi. This Skybus ticket booth is at the opposite end of the airport building to the Qantas/Jetstar terminal. Be aware that Jetstar flights seem to more commonly get changed or run late, so it's an idea to check/confirm times for your flights on the day. Don't lose track of time in the city! What will you be getting up to in Townsville?!

There are shops and things at Melbourne airport but it's nothing like Changi. I think after 3 hours you'd become rather bored.

You could spend some time in the Crown casino complex - shops, food, movies, casino.
