Xmas dinner

Hi,

We will be arriving from Perth Xmas night. We land at 6:30 pm, can anyone tell me the average time to get from the airport to Sourhbank via the Skybus and given the time we will be arriving in Southbank, can someone recommend a restaurant to book for a late Xmas dinner.

Thanx

Hello jetzclan,

I would allow an hour from landing to your hotel in the Southbank area, including disembarking, luggage collection, Skybus plus their extra service of delivering you by a small bus after arriving at the bus station at Southern Cross Station to your hotel, provided it is within the CBD or Southbank areas. Speak to the driver as you get on the bus telling him/her you want that extra service that doesn't cost you more. As for a place to eat, you will need to contact a few likely places to book well ahead. What about your hotel? Or google 'southbank restaurants Melb' and look through the listing. Also google the nearby Federation Square restaurants, just over Princes Bridge from Southbank (look at Taxi Dining Room). In both these areas you can go from high-end to mid-range, but you will need to book.

I would suggest getting a taxi from the airport to your hotel. Yes, it will cost anywhere from $20 - $40 more than skybus, but so much more convenient and time saving. I'm pretty sure the skybus hotel transfer service doesn't operate on xmas day, so you would still have to get from Southern Cross station to your hotel (on foot or by taxi).

A lot of restaurants will be closed Christmas night. Most of the big hotels will have xmas dinner eg the Langham, Grand Hyatt, and some of the restaurants in Crown Casino eg Conservatory. You will be looking upward of $150 per head, and the Langham is likely to be around $250 per head (will no doubt be excellent though). I would guess most of these will have a buffet xmas dinner opening at 6-6.30pm, so if you arrive by say 7.30 you'd be fine. Keep in mind they will likely close a bit earlier than normal though.

There will be other restaurants around town that will be open, but it's hard to predict (some that were open last year will not necessarily be open this year) - you will probably have to keep googling, keep an eye on various websites, or pick a few likely candidates and contact them directly.

You are best to ask your hotel about where to find Xmas dinner or Google same for Melbourne: i did that and just found this in a thread:I know Matteo's is open for Christmas lunch as is Vue du Monde and I guess the restaurants at the big hotels will also be open.

Last year we had Christmas dinner at Bistro Guillaume in the Crown Complex, but that is now gone in the redevelopment. It might be worth trying some of the other restaurants there too because several of them seemed to be open.

This year we have gone for the "walking distance" option and are on the waiting list at the Baths Restaurant, if that falls through we will have a casual lunch at home followed by a walk on the beach.

SKYBUS: Probably 20-30 mins from Tullamarine to the heart of the city (you can again Google that for distance and time in Maps) and a taxi would be more expensive and MAY take advantage of you possibly not being Melbournites or hoping you don't know your way around. I'd stick with the Skybus but yes, allow MORE time for baggage etc. Give it that hour as suggested in previous comment.

Get the Skybus to Southern Cross. If there is no shuttle service, its a 15-20min stroll to Southbank's main hotel area.

Pre-book any restaurants now. Most of the places around Sthbank are average in quality and over-priced but World Bar and Ludlow both have decent food. Try pre-booking in the city now. :)

Keep in mind most restaurants will want to close earlier than normal on xmas day particularly because of the high staff wages they'll be paying. For this reason they may not take 'late' bookings.
