any areas to avoid for accom

Hi im planning a trip to melbourne and I'm wondering if there is any area that is somewhat 'unsafe' to stay in? Is north melbourne ok considering that the accom there is cheaper? I read that st kilda area isn't very safe and hope to verify it. Thanks!

North Melbourne is predominately a residential area whereas St Kilda is more 'touristy', is located on the bay/beach and has a lively nightlife, lots of restaurants, cafes, pubs, etc. Both areas are 'safe', however, as with most cities you should exercise caution especially at night. ie. don't wander around deserted streets at night - stick to the high pedestrian areas. When choosing an accom area consider what sorts of things you want to do and see - if can often be false economy to stay outside the CBD when you factor in travelling back into the CBD each day/night. That said, both N.Melb & StKilda are reasonably close to the CBD - you can easily catch a tram into the CBD from either place. Tram takes about 10-15 min plus time to walk to the stop and wait for the tram.

Parts of Nth Melbourne may be cheaper because the transport to the city isn't that great and they are quiet residential areas with not much happening in the way of bars/clubs/restaurants/shops. It's not as well known as a tourist destination so may be less in demand.

It's actually a really nice area to stay in for that reason. Walking distance from the Queen Victoria Markets is a plus. Not a lot of noise at night.

As morticia quite rightly said - it's all safe as long as you take sensible precautions.

Loitering on the streets in the middle of the night is not a good idea - anywhere!
