10 days in Australia

Planning to be in Australia in 10 days between the 21st of December and 1st of Jan

Planning on spending a few days in Sydney and then in Melbourne.

We would be driving to Melbourne from Sydney: any suggestions on which cities / towns we should be staying in as part of the drive from Sydney to Melbourne?

Sydney: besides the Opera House and the Harbor, any suggestions on what more can we do: some excursions close to the city is also good.

Melbourne: plan to be at the MCG for the Ashes on Boxing Day: besides that, any suggestions on which are the good wineries one must look up, etc?

We are a young couple and will be flying in & out of HK.

Thanks

Is there a particular reason why you want to drive rather than fly?

If you are driving straight through on the highway, its a good 9-10 straight drive without stops. If you take the far more interesting costal route, then you could easily take 2 or 3 days, which defeats the purpose if you want to be in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test.

I trust you already have your tickets for the Boxing Day test? If not, get them now.

When in Melbourne, be sure to do a day trip to the Yarra Valley. All of the vineyards there are great but Chateau Yering is an absolute must do.
