Wife's 30th birthday - Where to go?

Hi Everybody,

I will be in Melbourne with my wife and her parents for Christmas/New Year's, which also includes my wife's birthday (her 30th!). The first idea was to go to Howl at the Moon, a really fun piano bar which closed here in Singapore (our adopted home) in 2009 and apparently so did the Melbourne location.

So any good substitute for a fun piano bar / restaurant / live show kind of thing? Keep in mind, I have the in-laws in tow.

I am thinking something like the Gem on Wellington Street, any other ideas?

Muchos Gracias!

http://www.copacabanaint.com.au

http://www.riosmelbourne.com

Both of these are a Brazilian style restaurant with a show although one is on Smith Street in Fitzroy which was traditionally a drug dealing area. It's no problem for the average person just going to a restaurant though & I understand the area is a lot "cleaner" than I remember it in the 1990's. The stigma of an area stays with it for decades I suppose!

Alternatively how about a Middle Eastern/Turkish/Lebanese type restaurant with a belly dancing show - always fun and popular and bookings are essential. Some ideas, albeit not in the Central Business District but with pretty easy public transport links:

Or you could go for a caberet style show at:

Not for everyone though and you probably go more for the show than the food!

Or you could just try a high class buffet such as Melba's Restaurant at the Langham Hotel:

Or Conservatory at Crown Casino:

Or China Bar Signature:

Whatever you choose there is no shortage of restaurants in Melbourne!

Another option which came to me is:

Some people consider it a bit "cheesy" but I like it. The only problem is it's not close to the city, being in the Dandenong Ranges. But you can always hire a car or catch a taxi to/from Belgrave train station.

If you like Gem, then you might want to try Ponyfish Island. It is actually a concrete island in the middle of the yarra river. Lots of fun, great atmosphere. See http://www.ponyfish.com.au/

Otherwise, here are some other similar places to Gem -http://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne . Loads of cool places to enjoy. Cheers, PW
