Glass milk bottles are not used any more.

The collection of recyclables varies. Household waste collection often/usually requires recyclables to be in a separate bin. Often you'll find separate bins in public places. In South Australia only there is a deposit paid at purchase for the return of a recyclable drink container.

Hi,

If you really are >>being an environmentally friendly person for a long time.<< the sail voyage to Oz will take about 12 weeks. Don't forget the Egyptian cotton sails and sheets to replace the kevlar composites.

Cheers,

Hi infoman, you will find that most Australians do well enough with basic recycling within the home as most of the local councils offer specific bins for certain items. However, I have noticed from my travels within Australia that recycling of hotel guests rubbish depends on a few factors -(1) the rubbish bin set up they offer in your room/ if they offer you a separate bin for your glass/paper etc, (2) your cleaner. Some are great at recycling and others are not, for various reasons.

If you find yourself in a room without any 'adequate' recycling options for your glass/paper/[cleaned] plastic etc, then you might have to take your good downs to the hotel communal area (if applicable) or ask the hotel staff to properly dispose of it via their own kitchen or at worst, take your goods with you and put them into the bins on the streets in Melbourne. You will find only two types of public bins on the streets though - one for real rubbish and another one, usually green in colour that is for bottles/cans & paper .

I usually just leave these items stacked neatly beside the bin in the room (although I do wonder whether or not it ends up in the appropriate recycling receptacle afterwards, or all gets thrown into landfill).
