What is your budget? In the meantime, look into the Quest apartments - a number of venues scattered around the city.

As you seem to like farm life and animals why not consider a night on Phillip island and see the penguins?

In may it would be good as the dark nights will be here and it would be an early viewing.

You can go for the day book a motel and have dinner at the penguin parade venue and watch the penguins come ashore.

Visit Nobby's point infact drive round the island.

it gets very cold and you need to rug up really well.

easy to get to and could even drive back to Melbourne after the parade.

Google penguin parade, Phillip Island and see for yourself.

Have you researched your farm stay? It will be in the country, so a few hours drive from Melbourne. I believe there is one along the GOR & maybe one down Gippsland way? I only know what has been mentioned on the forum's. I've never researched them myself. You will need to rent a car, so it might be worth you doing some more sightseeing while you are in the area. If we know which area you are looking at, we can help you more with the planning.

Also, are you planning to split your time in Melbourne, or do the farm stay at the start or end of your trip?

I'm sorry, what does >>very high level route<< mean?

I do not advise starting with the GOR. What time do you arrive in Melbourne?
