Try this web site for car rental comparison:

Be careful about the budget companies. I would try searching these forums for reviews on some of the budget, non-brand-name companies. Some are fine but always read the terms & conditions carefully.

hi jimmyssc , beware of cheap hire car companys most work out not to be so cheap ,there have been numerous reports on trip advisor about people not getting what they were promised .for piece of mind you are much better off going with one of the major companys who have a fairly good reputation in Australia try www.budget.com.au www.thrifty.com.au www.europcar.com.au www.avis.com.au all have good reputations , don't forget to make sure your travel insurance has hire car collision excess waiver insurance of at least 3000 dollars , hire companys charge a fortune for this cover .enjoy your holiday

From our recent experience we would say AVOID EUROPCAR! We have, in the past, founf them to be a reasonably good Company and have never had any problems until our recent trip to Australia. When we took our car from Europcar in Melbourne my husband checked it and found a scratch on the rear bumper which he pointed out to them and a note of the damage was made on our contract. We returned the car to Melbourne airport, had their receiving agent look it over, he agreed it was fine and waved to where he wanted it left.Nothing was offered in writing and, as we were quite happy that we had not had any problems, we did not ask for anything. We were then surprised with a charge for over £136 for a mark which, from the blurred picture they sent, was under the front bumper.! We are positive that did not occur when the car was in our possession but cannot prove it and Europcar took their money on our card details. Beware! We would not recommend them nor will we use that Company again.

To concur with the above comment from Netta5070 we also hired a car recently from Europcar Melbourne Domestic Airport. This car was booked two weeks previously and a time of arrival was given to Europcar. Needless to say when we arrived there was not a car available however after a reasonably short while the car arrived dripping wet from the washbay. With all the water and not good lighting it was difficult to see all minor scratches. A small chip was found on the outer edge of the rear left door, This was pointed out to the Europcar rep who indicated it was minor however we insisted on it being marked on the pre existing damage form. Very unfortunately we did not pick up a chip under the front bumber as per Netta5070 until we had left the premises. On return this proved to be an issue and almost half an hour waisted sorting it out. It would appear that customers are expected to do the pre existing damage checks rather than the Company employee,s doing a proper inspection. I saw several people having damage/scratches/chips etc photographed so it would appear this is a problem with Europcar Melbourne. We have hired cars many times from them in the past at other locations with no problems at all .However if returning to Melbourne it won't be Europcar getting my business.
