Melbourne itinerary

Hi All,

Appreciate your opinion on my plans on the trip. Planning to take it slow.

Day 1 - 10th may 750am arrival - Melbourne airport. Explore melbourne city

Day 2 - explore melbourne city

Day 3 - explore melbourne city

Day 4 - day trip to either dangdenongs or yarra valley, overnight melbourne

Day 5 - self drive to gor, overnight in Apollo bay

Day 6 - self drive from Apollo bay- warrnambool, see some whales, overnight warrnambool

Day 7 - self drive from warrnambool to ballarat, thereafter back to melbourne city for my last night

Day 8 - arrival at airport by 3pm

In melbourne, I will take it easy, visiting places like queen Victorial market', degraves st, crown casino, royal melbourne building, rmit, flinders station, block/royal arcade, Lyon st, federation sq. If time permits, gaol jail, st Kildare, botanic garden.

Gor trip will be flexible too, passing by the main attractions bells beach, 12 apo, gold rush town etc.

Questions:

1. For day 4, I am torn between yarra valley (which consist of places like healesvilles zoo and huge tree ferns, and I never once set foot on a winery before) and the dandenong ranges (huge tree ferns and steam train). In your opinion which would fit in well, taking my entire itinerary into consideration?

2. Is my gor plans of a good pace?

Thank you in advance.

To be honest, I don't think you need 2 and a half days to explore the city and you will certainly have time to see the gardens and visit St Kilda. Not sure why you would want to visit RMIT - it's just a bunch of University buildings.

If you are renting a vehicle, consider a day trip to Healesville sanctuary which is about an hour out of the city.

Otherwise it's a good plan. Not too rushed and quite varied taking in some great locations.

Re: Yarra Valley Vs Dandenong ranges.

If you are already going along the GOR, then you may not need to do the Yarra Valley region the GOR already has places to see Australian animals and there are also wineries in that region too. Check on the forum to this info as I remember reading about it.

Re: huge tree ferns. Not sure about the GOR for tree ferns but maybe the Otways National Park? One of the experts will be able to assist in this area.

This means that you can visit the Dandenongs afterall and visit Puffing Billy railway OR you can drop the region all together and go elsewhere? e.g. Ballarat, Bendigo, Dalyesford, Phillip Island etc.

Your itinerary for the GOR is a bit rushed but doable. Suggest visiting Erskine falls near Lorne, Paradise picnic ground at Apollo Bay and Maits rest where you are likely to see tree ferns. Www.visitvictoria.com.au and Parks Vic web site has more info. Also a search of the forum will bring up plenty of recent posts with more relevant information.

Emel49 - Will be visiting RMIT as I am a offshore graduate and had never see the building. Might have to tweak my plans if melbourne city part is really too long

Beryl - based on your suggestion, I will drop yarra and focus on a day trip to dandenong via a day tour.

Farmrick - noted that my gor is a bit rushed. What would you suggest? Overnight Lorne, apollo, warrnambool? Or Apollo, warrnambool, ballarat?

Thanks all for the valuable feedback

Oh, that makes sense then. If there's a particular or person you want to see you should check location first. There's a main campus in La trobe St but they have buildings all over the city.

For your GOR tour I would stay in Apollo Bay for the first night then Warrnambool. A night in Balarrat will give you a good opportunity to explore that city as well before returning to Melbourne. Sovreign Hill is worth a day out. While in Warrnambool, you could visit Flagstaff Hill and Tower Hill. Tower Hill is especially good early in the morning where you are likely to spot Australian animals in the wild.

Agree with emel49. Overnight at Apollo Bay Warrnambool and Ballarat and then return to Melbourne. Its going to be very rushed and you will have to work out how much time you want to spend at each attraction and the distance between each attraction. Sovereign Hill at Ballarat will need a full day.

There is so much to see and a couple of extra nights it you had the time would be much better.

Healesville Sanctuary is worth visiting, though I agree that self driving might be better than a tour. Puffing Billy is easily done by taking a suburban train to Belgrave, but if you want to see more of the Dandenong Ranges, self driving gives you more flexibility. Why do these attractions interest you? This will determine whether you should include them or not.

As mentioned, there are wineries along the GOR. Depending on what you want to do & see along the way, your itinerary looks fine to me.

Tks ellenwillow. Dropping yarra valley and opting for dandenong via tour. Will be driving for 4 straight days in gor, doubt I can take another day of driving...
