Good Friday & Ideas

Hi guys,

Traveling to Melbourne for just 3 nights over the Easter long weekend. We arrive Friday morning and will be staying at the Crown over the weekend. Few questions below :)

Was just curious as to how much Melbourne 'shuts down' on Good Friday, to my understanding the actual Crown Complex and city shopping (clothes etc) will be out of the question? What about restaurants for dinner in the evening?

If anyone has any ideas for cheapish clothes shopping I'd love to hear (group all in our 20's). We will be walking across to the DFO up from the Crown, and also heading to the Docklands harbor town - that's the extent of my shopping knowledge in Melbourne!

Finally, previous trips we have splurged a bit and dined out along the Yarra, could I please request some suggestions for a decent meal at a reasonable price. We are pretty easy.. steaks, burgers, ribs, seafood etc!

Appreciate any replies!

Cheers.

Most of Melbourne will be closed on Good Friday however you'll be able to find places open to eat in Lygon Street, Carlton or even Acland Street, St Kilda. Both would be a $15-$20 cab fare from Crown. As for alternate shopping places - Chapel Street, Prahran is worth a shot. Start at the Toorak Road end and work your way south until you get tired of it.

Southbank was jumping when we stayed over Easter a few years back. Many restaurants were open GF.

Lots of restaurants will be open, but no retail. Our GF tradition when we lived near the city was to get the Tram down to Port Melbourne and get a feed of Fish and Chips from Hunky Dory and go and eat them on the foreshore :)

If you like footy, there is live football this Good Friday in Melbourne this year. Melbourne Rebels are playing Western Force (Perth) on Good Friday at AAMI park.

Although most museums are closed on Good Friday, the Melbourne Zoo is open so that's an option. So are other attractions like Luna Park . Luna Park can be fun for all ages I suppose, and of course it's at St. Kilda with plenty of cafes, the beach, etc.

It's not all that different to Sydney.

All of Chinatown (Little Bourke St) will be open.

More and more restaurants are closing on Good Friday. They say it's because of high staff rates of pay. Those that are open will often charge a 10% Public Holiday surcharge.

There are lots of free BBQs along the Yarra River from the Princes Bridge heading away from the city. It's a great day for a BBQ on the river.

While the big supermarkets are closed, the small independent IGAs are, for the most part, open. There's a well stocked IGA in Sturt St Southbank - perhaps a 10 minute walk from the Casino - which is always open on Good Friday and I know there are others in the area.

So many good places to eat in that area it's hard to know where to begin. My own current favorite is Hercules Morse on Clarendon St, South Melbourne (a 10 minute walk from Crown).

Thank you all for your responses! Apologies for the lack of reply I haven't been able to get online.

Great to know there seems to be options for dining out on GF. Will also be suggesting the Zoo for a few hours to my travel partners!

Cheers guys :-)

Ihaven't been to this, but it might be worth dropping in on as it's very central and free.
