Please don't get right off an international flight and attempt to drive to Phillip Island. It's more like a 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive from the airport in the morning (peak hour traffic around the city) and you have just got off a long flight.

Best to have one of your city days at the start so you can get over your jetlag, have a full nights sleep and then set off the next morning.

That's an awful lot you have planned in as limited time. Comments in #1 are a real concern please take note of what L0stris has to say. Also before you do any driving in this country please read the information in the FAQ's on the right hand side of the Australia forum titled "driving in Australia".

Most car hire companies wont allow their cars to be taken on ferries you will need to check whether your rental car company will allow this.

Day 5 I would only drive as far as Apollo Bay and stay the night. By the time you reach AB it will be close to late afternoon and the drive across Cape Otway alone to the 12 Apostles will take nearly 2 hours.

The Grampians alone need a couple of days.

I would strongly suggest your review your itinerary, there is just too much happening in the time you have.

LOstris is right, there is no way you could safely drive from the airport to cowes [phillip island] in 90 minutes, even if you had every green traffic light and the freeway traffic flowed smoothly you would still be looking at 2.30 hours and probably closer to 3 hours . my son lives on the island and always allows at least 3 hours to travel to and from the airport .enjoy your trip

My goodness - I'm exhausted just reading this itinerary!

Unless you are flying business class and sleeping all the way from Singapore, I totally agree about the inadvisability of driving straight to PI.

I suggest you swap Day 11 with Day 1 and stay in Melbourne for the first night. Actually, it makes sense, because your last stop is Ballarat which is closer to the airport.

You have on your list Phillip Island, The Dandenongs (Belgrave), Mornington Peninsula, Queenscliff, Warrnambool, The Great Ocean Road, The Grampians, Ballarat and Melbourne - all in 12 days. It can be done, but it will be an exhausting 12 days where you get to spend most of your time in the car watching the scenery whizz by at high speed.

My suggestions is to prioritize what you really want to see and pick at the most 5 areas rather than the 9 you currently have listed. If you really want to see more, Victoria isn't going anywhere and you can always come back another time.

It looks like you have copied and pasted everything you could find on every tourism website! Are you really genuinely interested in all of those things?

I am also concerned about your timings. The feedback above is that getting to Phillip Island in the time you state is not possible, so where did you get that time?

Wow, i read the comments n thanks for the advice especially on the philip island and great ocean route distance n time required.

I have checked the traveling time required from goggle map. Have taken note the far distance on each individual location n will allocate more time for it. I guess i will break up my great ocean route to make a stop over in the middle instead of staying 3 nites at warrnambool as my base.

N also will adjust my plan to just 2 sight per day n take it slow in the driving part.

Day 1 driving straight to Philip island should be ok as we have 2 driver n will just take turn about the driving. Also we are used to long road trip like this so after landing n driving straight should not be a problem for us.

About the grampian, most likely will just visit 1-2 lookout among the 3 as i know it might be tiring to walk all 3 plus the waterfall. I guess i have to play by the ear when i arrived there.

Yes, MacKnee : I am interested in the thigns i have listed, my friend wanted to do the sky dive n i want to bring my son n mum on the tri bike n puffy billy.

>>I have checked the traveling time required from goggle map.<<

Where did you get the time in your original post?

>>Day 1 driving straight to Philip island should be ok as we have 2 driver n will just take turn about the driving.<<

But both drivers will be off an international flight so how does that help?

>>About the grampian, most likely will just visit 1-2 lookout among the 3 as i know it might be tiring to walk all 3 plus the waterfall.<<

You have too much on your list. If you want to include the Grampians simply for a quick stop at 1-2 lookouts that is something you could leave out. There are many lookouts elsewhere on your route which you can include. There are many lookouts in Victoria and it makes no sense to chase them all in limited time.

Btw I have seen it before on other threads, driving is not considered tiring but walking is considered tiring?

>>Yes, MacKnee : I am interested in the thigns i have listed, my friend wanted to do the sky dive n i want to bring my son n mum on the tri bike n puffy billy.<<

Again, you have too much on your list, better to make time to enjoy the things you really want.

I hope you are aware that in the Grampians the waterfalls and lookouts are not next to the carparks. Visiting Mackenzie Falls, for example, is at least a 2 hour exercise. It's a long way down and it always seems like an even longer way back up.

Anyhow, I will be really interested to see how you go so we look forward to your trip report.

PS what day will you be driving straight from the airport to PI. I'd like to know so that I can warn all my friends to stay off the road as there will be two overconfident drivers trying to navigate unfamiliar traffic in an unfamiliar car in an unfamiliar country with road 'etiquette' that they don't understand and who haven't slept for the better part of 24 hours.

Someone once posted a map showing the relationship in the size of Singapore to Victoria which appeared to be about the size of the Bellarine Peninsular, I don't think you realise just how big the state is.

The distances involved and times given by Google maps/earth don't allow time for rest, toilet and fuel stops etc and IMO are optimistic.

Doing the GOR (which incidentally is a difficult drive at the best of times even for drivers experienced in travelling the route) from Melbourne and returning via the shortest route is in excess of a 500k round trip.

Driver fatigue is a real problem on our roads and this is one of the topics covered in the section in the FAQ's regarding driving in Australia. Too often on the forum we see overseas visitors apparently over estimating their ability to drive on our roads wanting to hit the ground running and cramming too much into the relatively short time they have.

You need to work out what you want to visit, factor in driving times between destinations including rest stops etc and how much time you are prepared to drive each day.

Along the GOR at attractions such as Bells Beach, Aireys Inlet (Split Point LH), Erskine falls etc you need to spend at least an hour at each.

Cape Otway and the 12 Apostles needs at least a minimum of 2 hours each as well as the other attractions in the Port Campbell national park and that's not counting visiting the Grampians, Ballarat and Phillip Island.

There is a real danger that you will decide to go ahead and do the trip according to what you plan to do and you might actually achieve it. But did you enjoy it, did you actually experience anything that the attractions has to offer with out leaving your self and those travelling with you exhausted?

I share the concerns of those who have responded to this thread please re think this.

Hi all, hv relook n think abt what you guys have mention here. If say i don't wish to go into mel city on day 1, which is the nearest location i should drive to n set up base then ? Mornington ? Geelong ? or Ballarat n do the other way n put Philip Island as last then back to City ?

If there were anything i want to take out from the list, it would be Grampian, Would still want to keep the rest of the places to go if possible. If someone can just help me to replan i would really appreciate it as i am not sure the other stuff i plan is doable or not. sky diving have to be on a weekday though.

My idea is to set up base for 2 nites at each location n 3 nites in the city so that i don't have to pack n unpack my stuff too much. However considering the distance for the Ocean route, am ok to stop 1 nite in the middle. Port Campbell maybe ?

2 days @ Mornington for The enchanted maze, puffy billy & peninsular hot spring

2 days @ philip island for to cover various activities on the island

3 days on ocean route returning to Mel city

3 days in the city
