flights are booked

we are a family of 4 two kids aged 5 and 7. Looking for ideas, we are arriving in Perth 1st august and leaving on the 16th. We will be booking a hotel in perth either side as we arrive late and depart early. Question 1, which airport hotel would you recommend or is it far too the beach hotels. rottnest is a must and a couple of days at a beach. Question 2 where in perth near a beach self catering . We would like to hire a campervan fot 7-10 days looking to go up north, monkey mia etc. Question 3 would we have time to fit in the margaret river bearing in mind the vast distances. Any advice gratefully accepted, thanks in advance.

1. Re: flights are booked

Just a small tip, if your question is easy to read more people will be inclined to read it and answer. Paragraphs are a great help with this.

August is mid-winter. The beach will be chilly and if we are lucky, wet. With this in mind, do you still want to stay at the beach?

If you spend 7-10 days going to/from Monkey Mia, you should have 5-8 days for Margaret River. Given that MR is about a four hour drive south, you have plenty of time.

To work out distances and driving routes, I recommend

Use the "Get directions" function.

Have fun!

1. Perth doesn't have airport hotels.

2. The airport is close enough that any hotel in Perth/Fremantle is within a reasonable distance, what ever time your flight lands.

3. There aren't a lot of beach hotels.

4. Accommodation is very expensive and scarce in WA. Find what you want, take a deep breath and book it ASAP. For self contained accommodation in the Perth metro area near the beach I have had friends who have stayed at www.sunmoon.com.au in Scarborough and were happy and Sorrento Beach Resort is popular www.sorrentobeach.com.au/

5. As YorkFoodie has stated, August is winter. It can and most likely (fingers crossed) will be wet. And cool for you - cold for us. There is a misconception by many Brits that Australia does not get cold. It can and does. And our rain is heavy, not drizzle. On saying that, I love the beach in winter and we can have some fantastic cool sunny days. Keep an eye on the weather and take your ay trip to Rotto on one of those days if you can.

6. Have you driven and used a Motorhome before? Have you seen the prices to hire? Places to legally stop going north are limited, you will still have to pay for campsites. August is a popular time in the north of WA - MM/Denham/Coral Bay/Exmouth - book your site early.
