When booking make sure your hotel has Wi-fi!!!

Just a message to say I reserved quite a few places for my wife to stay in WA, these last couple of weeks.

After waiting a few days - I have just heard from her that many hotels either charge or do not provide the service - Even a leading chain ie, Ibis in Perth, one had to sit in the lobby which I suppose is better than nothing!

So if you book accommodation make sure they offer Wi-fi (if required)

This is not unusual all over the world .... and I never know why. Although I guess you could argue that they charge for the phone so why not for internet?

Yes, it's an old issue worldwide.

Several reasons;

- Owner/Principal being cheap/lazy

- Hotels want to charge (as mentioned by able)

- Hotel wants to keep the appearance of charged product, so it can be given away as a 'value add' (room package/inclusions). Doesn't always mean advertised is charged.

- Demand from corporates is high (company pays), and corporate business to a hotel usually outweighs leisure and transient by about 3:1, unless it's a resort hotel/destination

- Tax offset

The irony is that the cheaper the accommodation the more likely it is that there will be free wifi.

I've yet to find a hostel that doesn't have it and the most expensive wifi is generally in 5* hotels.

100% Eva, you're spot on.

It's the 5 star that's dragging their feet about it.

That's true too GW, the room type has a significant impact on the pricing.

Yield spacing between two room type is isn't often reflected in the advertised price.

And Hilton's are a unique beast...

IHG is free worldwide

Ummm - we have just done a quick RTW (7 weeks) - USA (Hawaii west coast north to south and NYC) London, Belgium, Paris and northern Italy. EVERY place we stayed offered FREE WiFi - even in remote national parks in Montana, Utah and Texas. .

IME Australia is one of the FEW places where you have to pay!!!! It is APPALLING .

BTW we do not ever stay 5 *. I am talking 3-4 star and/or B&Bs and self catering apartments.

In my experience, it is the more expensive hotels that charge for wifi, while mid-price ones do not. Having said that, it seems that many hotels in Australia have not caught up with the idea that it costs almost nothing to provide free wifi and it is something that will attract paying guests.

Agree with Nozzie. Have stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels in the depths of Sth America and free wifi is everywhere. Same with most places in Thailand.

The only place I seem to get slogged is in Aus.
