Anzac Day

Hi! I will be visiting the beautiful city of Perth for about a week in April. We will be there for the ANZAC long weekend and I am wondering about the parade, etc.

What time/day does the parade run? Are there other special events around the city on this weekend?

Thanks in advance for the advice :)

Dear Kristy31

The Dawn Service at Kings Park starts about 4.30am and is very popular. Kings Park is about 20mins walk from the city centre. The march through the city starts at 9am. The best website for all the info you need is the RSL. www.rslwahq.org.au

cheers

ANZAC day is the 25th April every year :-) and the March (or Parade)is on through the streets of the city (Perth) on the 25th come rain or shine. There are services held all over the state/country at dawn (closer to 6.00am than 4.30am Howzie) but Kristy31 you might like to get there that early if you want to be near the front. Thousands turn up to Kings Park for the service. There are also other memorial services at different times.

Shops are closed on the 25th although Fremantle/Perth CBD may open after 12.

The rest of the weekend is as normal.

Is the traditional Anzac Day past-time of two-up practiced in the West?

The Burswood Casino caused a big hoo haa about it some years ago. Can't remember what happened but some deep dark depths are telling me the answer is "No". Someone else put me right if wrong please.:-)

Oh and I meant to ask, if shops are closed does this mean restaurants/pubs are also closed?

Thanks!

Dear Kristy31

Two Up is an australian gambling game. Two coins are tossed in the air and you call how they will land. ie heads, tails etc.

PS Perthite, whilst many sewrvices start at 6/6.30 Kings Park starts it tribute at 4.30 with archival footage, around 5.30 they lay the wreaths.

Yes pubs etc are closed Kristy31 until noon - it is a sign of respect. There used to be the requirement if you were taking money for a service before 12, you should donate half to the RSL - don't think that is the case now.

Howzie - they introduced the early films to keep the crowds entertained since the Dawn Service got so popular. I believe the plan is to be playing the Last Post as the sun rises over the Hills - around 6.45am at that time of the year. I suppose when you go depends on what you are going for. I like to go and read the wreaths but always get very emotional when they read the Poem and blow that darn bugle :-)

Hello Kristy31. Congratulations and thankyou for taking an interest in one of our most special days of the Australian year If you want to see the parade avoid St Georges Terrace ( the main strip) if you can ,it is very crowded and if you don't get there early you may not see that well. Best to find closer to the start or finish. Down by the river would be a good spot close to The Esplanade that's where the parade ends and the memorial service is taken. Enjoy your day in our city.

I believe they play two-up at Burswood as a regular thing, and then there's the school at Kalgoorlie...
