One day only - suggestions please

We are on a cruise that stops in Fremantle for one day in Feburary 2013. What do you suggest that we do? We have seen excursions on the Swan River and/or spending time in Perth &/or Fremantle. Please give us ideas on how to spend our day. Many thanks.

You can easily fill a day just wandering around Freo. Maybe pop into Little Creatures for a beer and lunch, visit the Maritime Museum, walk around town, check out the old buildings, various shops, etc.

Most people visit Freo from Perth, not the other way around! A trip along the Swan River is certainly a possibility - Capt Cook cruises has a nice 90 minute cruise to Perth, but I'm not sure if they do the commentary on the Freo-Perth leg as most folks seem to board the cruise in Perth...

There are also wine cruises along the Swan.

If Perth is more your cuppa, you can take the cruise from Freo-Perth, then walk up to Kings Park for a few hours, maybe visit the Perth Mint, etc. Return to Freo via train.

If you only have one day make sure you get on to the river on a cruise of some sort and make your way to Kings Park from where you can see over the river and for the best views of the city.

While you can spend a whole day in Fremantle, there is plenty to do and see, you will not get any view of Perth itself - I think it would be a geat pity to not go

on the river.

Be prepared though, in February it will most likely be very hot, around 35C-40C. You should also wear hats and 30+ sunscreen.

I too would get the ferry up the river. It leaves from near the E Shed on the wharf .. about 100 metres from where the passenger terminal is.

If its hot, it will be nice on the river... and you will see some beautiful homes from the boat that you cannot see from the road.

Once you arrive at Barrack Street Jerry, walk up into the CBD area ...and then get the free CAT bus up to Kings Park ... for a walk through the botanical gardens, take in the views of the city from the Anzac War Memorial ..

To return to Fremantle on the train, you need to go to the Perth City station on Wellington Street.

Other options may be to take a tour along our northern beaches to Hillarys. I am sure there will be tours you can get on the ship for any port you are in. I've seen a few buses around the ship when they get into port, so there must be a few different tours offered to passengers.

I hope you enjoy our beautiful city and the weather isn't too hot for you.

Thanks so very much for all your suggestions. It seems like doing a river cruise to Perth would be a great idea. I am thinking we could look around Fremantle in the am and then go to Perth. I understand that the train station in Fremantle is close to where the ship docks (for the return trip). Is this correct?

Yep ... you have to cross the train lines from the passenger terminal to get into the town of Fremantle ...

Cross over the bridges from the terminal and turn right ... the station is just along a bit further.

Getting the afternoon ferry up to Perth will be nice and relaxing for you (even tho you've had a relaxing time of the cruise) .. and get the train back.

Or train it both ways to save some time... the train stops at a few stations along the way, but is quicker than the ferry. If you want to get the ferry back, check with the purser on board to what time you have to be back .. then work out by the Captain Cook cruises what time the ferry returns to Fremantle to board. It's a 10 minute walk along the harbour from the ferry to the passenger terminal.

There is a river cruise that goes up to the swan valley, stops at Sandalwood winery. Perfect to keep cool in the hot weather. A Scenic trip.

Perth city centre is bustling during the day and on weekends. Sundays can be quiet and so are weeknights.

Little Creatures, a beer hall is good for a drink, lunch or dinner. Early morning coffee in Fremantle along the cappuccino strip.

The sun sets over the ocean, Cottesloe or city beach is perfect to enjoy the end of a hot day in Perth. There are some restaurants and cafes along the beach strip or you could have fish and chips on the grassed area of both beaches.

Given it will be hot you might consider taking your bathers ( swimsuit) with you and fit in a swim at one of our glorious beaches. In Fremantle get to train station (near overpass from cruise ship) and just outside is the BLUE CAT bus. It's free and will take you to South Beach where you will find a great beach and a grassed area with some trees- two cafes are located there for coffee. Plenty to see and do in Freo- second vote for a drink at Little Creatures in late afternoon. Also can train from Freo to Cottesloe station then walk up Forrest St to lovely Cottesloe beach (15-30 minute walk) Remember if a very hot day you will want to keep indoors in the hot midday. Kings Park great to wander as well.

When you are out and about do wear a hat and plenty of high factor sun screen. The sun in February has a mean bite.
