What to do in Perth in 4 days

Hi all,

We are heading to Perth for 4 days in March, and have no idea what do you!!

We will have a hire car, and are happy to spend up to 4 hours a day driving to see different sites.

We like scuba diving and snokling, if there are any places worth seeing close by, and really like the idea of doing a road trip and spending one night at a different place to see the sights.

We would love to hear any suggestions and ideas about what to do and where to go, and even where to stay?

Thanks heaps,

p.s we aren't wine lovers, so don't know if going down to Margaret River would be worth it?

Hi, you don't have to drink wine in Margaret River, it has some really scenic drives, huge trees, great beaches, restaurants and caves. And diving, and breweries if beer's more your thing.

A day trip for snorkelling would be Rottnest Island off the Perth coast, approx 1 hour by ferry you could spend the day and head back in the afternoon. There are a few beaches in Perth - Marmion Marine Park has good snorkelling. Other excellent snorkelling spots are way more than a day drive apart in WA though eg Ningaloo or Abrohlos.

ok so that was a great idea...

itinerary...

20th - overnight near perth airport for 5.30am flight to exmouth

21st - 5.30 flight to exmouth, then hire car to ningaloo reef

(where should we stay? ningaloo reef resort?)

22nd - coral bay/ningaloo - 2 dive Navy Pier (top 10 dive site in world)

23rd - coral bay./ningaloo - Whaleshark day tour

24th - 12.20 flight from exmouth to perth

25th - 12.10 flight to melbourne

so questions...

where should we stay overnight in perth near the airport on the 20th?

where should we stay while near ningaloo? ninglaoo reef resort?

Where should we overnight in Perth? somewhere nice to unwind and perhaps get a good meal before flying out on the 25th

Perhaps check out what is available in Exmouth? There is not a lot of accommodation choices. Try using the Ex Tourist web site.

Perth? Closest to the airport/s are anywhere along Great Eastern Highway so Redcliffe, Belmont, Ascot. Put those suburbs in to Wotif to give yourself a starting point.

Burswood (Crown Complex) may fit your bill for your final night.

Don't forget that March is still cyclone season up north.

Four days isn't much time to visit Exmouth/Coral Bay...even if you fly, it's a long way up there. It looks like you only have two full days allocated to the NW and the rest is travel. That's not much time given the distances.

Ningaloo Reef extends some 280 km, and can be accessed from Exmouth and Coral Bay. Coral Bay is 152 km south of Learmonth airport and Exmouth is about a 30 minute drive north.

Where you stay depends on what you plan to do, but keep in mind that the whale sharks migrate north. As March is early in the season, you might do best to stay in Coral Bay.

<22nd - coral bay/ningaloo - 2 dive Navy Pier (top 10 dive site in world)>

Navy Pier is located out of Exmouth, not Coral Bay.

With so little time I suggest you pick Exmouth OR Coral Bay, you really don't have time to do both. You can dive Navy Pier and take a whale shark tour from Exmouth, but it's a bit of a drive from town to the boat lauching point. Whereas in Coral Bay, you're right there, so access to the reef is much easier.

Keep in mind that tour operator scuba dive schedules are often limited to a few days a week and can be cancelled if there aren't enough participants, so they may not coordinate with your very limited schedule. I highly recommend to research and book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Accommodation in both Exmouth and Coral Bay is limited and of a questionable standard. We stayed at Exmouth Ningaloo Caravan & Holiday Resort in Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef Resort Coral Bay. Neither were particularly good, but so it goes in NW WA.

Hi,

Another vote for Coral Bay (Ningaloo Reef Resort ) for 2 nights & last night at the Novotel in Exmouth.

See wotif for rates & availability. you would need to book your accommodation to avoid any disappointment as the area is very popular with limited accommodation.

ok yep so that sounds good. i know it isn't much time but we booked these flights when they were cheap cheap cheap and it was only meant to be an "extended" weekend.

Ok so we hit learmonth airport - so you're suggesting drive straight down to coral bay and stay at ninglaoo reef resort for 2 nights. that sounds good because we can do a 2 dive / manta swim in one day which will be great, then go whale shark diving the next day.

Then head back towards exmouth for a night and do 2 dives on Navy Pier.

So my understanding is that they do whale shark swimming in both locations but coral bay is better to do it because you've got better access to water during your 'downtime'?

Access to the reef via Exmouth is more difficult and time consuming. It involves a longish drive just to access the Tantabiddi boat ramp, where the whale shark tours leave from.

Coarl Bay is much easier from an access standpoint.

Only one tour operator has the concession for the Navy Pier Dive.

Suggest checking with them ahead of time...they weren't running the trip when we visited one year in June, can't remember why.

Whalesharkndive.com.au also offer this dive, are they the same company?

You've got me on that one. Either the websites aren't up to date (not uncommon here in WA) or things have changed in the past few years.
