family adventure activity in or around perth as a thank you

Im visisting my brother and his family (wife, 2 children aged 9 and 11) in May or Oct 2013. I would like to book an adventure activity for 5 adults and the 2 children as an exciting way of saying thank you for their hospitality. I was thinking about an overnight camp somewhere with a guide, rafting, or staying on a boat overnight with some fishing, swimming, etc.

I have never been to Australia before and am so loooking forward to it as I have not seen my bro for 3 years!

I would be very grateful for any ideas, recommendations or suggestions . Thanks, Maria

October would be a good time to visit Dwellingup which is a small town less than 2 hours drive from Perth. Great for camping or cottages at Nanga Bush Camp and the Murray River is beautiful. Opportunites to hire canoes or the organised rafting trips are great fun but not cheap. Just google Nanga Bush Camp, Dwellingup Rafting or River Gods. Visiting in May not as good as little rapids after summer.

May or Oct would be a good time to be on a boat charter at Rottnest Island. May be a bit cold for swimming but could fish, surf ski etc. An overnight boat charter with skipper would be expensive

Taunton Farm down near Margaret River is a popular spot with workmates who have younger children.

While there the kids would enjoyu a visit to the Margaret River Chocolate Factory and Simmos Ice-Cream .. which has an area for you to have lunch.

The Candy Cow at Coweramup, the kids can see some candy being made. We were there when they were making honeycomb and we got samples.

Rottnest is expensive to get to for a day trip... but maybe you could stay a night over there ... everyone hires bikes, ride to wherever you want. Its very safe for children to ride around .. you can stay at the Lodge, or maybe even get a house for an overnight stay?

A favourite with some friends of mine and many Perth people do it, is an overnight stay at the Crown Metropol Hotel at the casino ... they've just renovated the whole hotel/casino complex, and their pool area is wonderful. They even have an indoor pool. You can get rooms with two queen beds so you will fit in the one room with your kids. Theoutdoor pool area has waterslides for the kids.

Heaps of places to eat .. altho the kids wont be allowed into the casino.

At least its close to the city (on the eastern end) and I think this would be the best of all the options. But we've given you some ideas.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy your stay in our wonderful city.

By the way, weatherwise, October would be better than May.

The Treetop Walk is in the Southwest of our state just east of Walpole. Also some great canoeing and fishing in the area. It would however require a 2 night stay in Walpole or nearby to do both activities. Walpole is approx 400 kms from Perth.
