Well, if you look at www.whereis.com or even Google Maps you will see exactly what it is near. Where you spend your time depends entirely on what you want to do and see.

Yes, Rottnest is a possibility for a day, as is Fremantle. Have a look at the WA Tourism website and all the info to the right of the screen to see what appeals:

The ferries to Rottnest leave from Fremantle and somewhere else up the coast a bit - Hilarys I think. (Which, by the way, is another nice place to spend a few hours, with a nice drive along our beautiful beaches)

Another thing to remember, in Guildford you are on the rail line (Midland-Perth-Fremantle) and in Fremantle and the city, you have the free CAT bus.

Guildford is an historic suburb and almost next door to the Swan Valley (wineries etc). There is Woodbridge house (historic) which from memory has a nice little coffee shop. The Swan Valley Visitors Centre is in Guildford and I think there is a museum and the old gaol there?

Nearby suburbs with big shopping centres are Midland Gate, Morley Galleria, Belmont Forum. Having a car puts things in easy reach for you.

Enjoy.

Re the train line Fremantle to Midland, read this link which outlines changes to platforms.

…wa.gov.au/RailProject/…Default.aspx

Timetables etc

Easier to get to Fremantle by train rather than drive. You don't need a car to get around as free CAT buses run regularly if too hot to walk.

Rottnest is great, tho not a cheap day out. You can catch the ferry from B shed in Freo.

Some interesting exhibitions in the city at the moment:

From MOMA

And it is the Perth International Arts Festival

With so little time, I'd forgo Rottnest and spend some time at Kings Park instead. You can get a good feel for Perth by taking in the views at Kings Park.

another vote for exploring Fremantle or maybe take a cruise up the Swan River too.

Suggest you catch the ferry one way to Fremantle- Captain Cook cruises are quite good- you can return on the train.

Depends what it is you are interested in but I would suggest the train to Perth City and use the Cat Buses http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/Home.aspx to get up to kings park, the perth mint, bell tower, museum or shopping in the city. You can also get a cat bus to the barrack street jetty and a ferry over the river to the Zoo. This will easily fill a day and is more than do-able on your own.

I would also look into a day tour to the swan valley for some wine tasting if that is of interest.
