Rottnest Express leaves from Barrack Street Jetty (Perth city) and proceeds down the Swan River, making a stop at Northport Rous Head (north Fremantle) to pick up additional passengers.

They offer a special on Tuesday, making it cheaper than other days.

Do be aware that the ride from Northport to Rottnest can be pretty darn rough. Best to take sea sickness tablets if you're prone to sea sickness - I am, and had I not been prepared, it could have been really ugly.

I wasn't impressed with Rottnest Express or Rottnest Island, but others would disagree. Don't get your hopes up too high and expect to pay dearly. IMO, WA has much prettier and more easily accessible beaches on offer.

There's also a fast ferry that departs from Hillarys Boat Harbor:

Enjoy WA.

I've just been searching for the prices for ferry transport to Rottnest Island and the only one I could find after a great deal of difficulty was a special fare of $39 return from the city or Fremantle. I couldn't access the Hillarys site at all. There was no indication of what the price would be outside of the special offered.

I realise that a lot of local people love Rottenest for a lay back beach sort of holiday but it wouldn't be good to go there in the winter. Too cold and definitely not beach weather. You could probably hire a bike and ride around the island a bit which is rather pretty, have a bit of lunch but that would be about all.

We like Rotto in winter, but then we're not looking to spend all day laying on the beach or frolicing in the waves. We like looking for whales passing, watching the dolphins play at West End, seeing the quokkas and generally having fewer people around because it's not high season. Obviously a day when it's sheeting down rain is not a good choice but if it's fine, then I think it's well worth a visit.

I just opened the Fast Ferries link (Hillarys) w/o problem - maybe the site was down?
