Help appreciated for 20-29 Dec itinerary

Hello all,

have made a last minute decision to book a holiday to Perth for the above dates.

Now trying to book accommodation when I read on these forums it is peak season.

I will be traveling with hubby, 3.5 and 1 year old.

Rough plan now is to spend 2 nights in Perth or Fremantle (20th-22nd),

then head down to stay over at Margaret River for 4 nights (22nd-26th) before heading up to Perth and Fremantle again.

Am undecided whether to switch the sequence around and spend the first half down at Margaret River region before heading back to the city.

Which place is a better option taking into consideration whether shops/attractions/restaurants are open?

We have booked the rental car for the entire period of travel to pick up and drop off at airport.

Appreciate any advise or suggestions that I can consider as well.

Thank you!

I think there is likely to be more open in Perth/Fremantle over Christmas, so maybe stay in that area over the Christmas days, just book your accom ASAP!

If you're arriving in the early morning you should consider spending at least your first night in Perth or Fremantle as driving down south at peak time when you're wrecked from minimal sleep the night before is a recipe for bad things to happen.

If you can, book somewhere self-catering for at least Christmas Day as finding a restaurant which still has bookings available will be difficult and expensive. Buy your food the day before at the latest.

I agree with Tina that there may be more for you in Perth/Fremantle for Christmas/Boxing Day, though you could contact the Margaret River Visitor Centre to see if this is in fact the case.

Don't forget your infant seats for the car :-)

Thank you all for the replies!

We have managed to book a farm stay during the period.

YorkFoodie, yes definitely we had included car seats rental for our two kids. We know how strict the rules are down under for this, for good reasons too:)

Hi Adlyn,

I have booked Pump Hill Farm at Pemberton.

They have a comprehensive website and there has been many positive reviews from fellow Singaporeans on other sites.

Many of the farms closer to Margaret River town are booked up. You need to decide on your accomodation soon.

Updated itinerary, calling for any comments/suggestions as usual.

Day 1 - 20 Dec

Arrival at evening time around 7pm.

Pick up car rental at airport & drive to Fremantle - Esplanade Hotel.

Was thinking to have our dinner at the airport first - how are the food options like?

Also, I am assuming there won't be wildlife on the drive down (not sure about sunset timing)?

Day 2 - 21 Dec

Visit Fremantle markets, maritime museum. Explore the town and perhaps the Prison? Not sure if it is suitable for us -kids are only 3.5 & 1 years old, and hubby & I had been to the Port Arthur Prison down in Tassie.

Drive down south. Stopover at Rockingham. Depending on time, take either the ferry or glass-bottom cruise to Penguin Island.

Still deciding between Busselton or Bunbury for 2 nights as a base to explore around the area.

Is this day too packed? Any recommendations about your preferences for Busselton or Bunbury?

Should we make advance booking for the ferry/cruise to Penguin island?

Day 3 - 22 Dec

Explore the area of Busselton/

Chocolate factory, wine and cheese tasting are the plans.

Day 4 - 23 Dec

Explore and finish whatever we haven't

Drive to Pemberton for farm stay at Pump Hill.

Day 5 - 24 Dec

After morning farm feeding, visit valley of the giants for tree top walk or head to Augusta area for more dolphin or whale watching or back to Margaret river.

How's the chances of spotting whales at this time? I've read conflicting info.

Day 6 -25 Dec

Will take it slow today. Christmas lunch out at one of the restaurants in Pemberton.

BBQ dinner at farm.

Day 7 - 26 Dec

Plans as per day 5.

Day 8 - 27 Dec

Check out of Farm stay. Back to Perth city Mounts Bay apartment.

Visit Bell towers/Swan river.

Kings park in the late afternoon to catch the sun set.

Day 9 - 28 Dec

Undecided between Perth Zoo or Caversham Wildlife park.

Shopping at Harbourtown.

Day 10 - 29 Dec

More shopping, packing and flight back home.

Thanks in advance for advise and suggestions!

"Christmas lunch out at one of the restaurants in Pemberton. "

I am only going to comment on the above...

Do you know how many restaurants (as opposed to cafes) there are in Pemberton?

Have you booked one for Christmas lunch?

I suggest emailing or ringing the Pemberton Visitors Centre for advice. Details are:

Tel: 08 9776 1133 Email: pemtour@karriweb.com.au

Good luck...

Your little ones might love the river foreshore areas- Matilda Bay, Peppermint Grove, Point Walter etc. So much more interesting than shopping on the final days of your holiday!
