Need help in planning 8D7N in Perth

Hi, my family of 5 (3 teenage children) will be going to Perth from 15 Dec - 21 Dec 2013.

We will be arriving the airport at 18:20pm on 15 Dec 2013 Saturday.

We planned to pick-up our rented car and drive all the way from the airport to the Preston Footprints Resort which we will be staying there throught the 7 nights. (Not too sure if this is advisable or should we take a maxicab directly to the resort?, we are afraid it would be too dark to drive on the road by then we cleared our luggage etc.)

Our intention of this trip is to self-drive to cover most of the must visit palces and and join the 1 Day Pinnacles, Koalas and Sand Boarding 4WD Adventure tour on one of the day.

We planned to go to the Fremantle Market on the 2nd day which is a Sunday.

Join the full day Pinnacles, koalas and Sand Boarding 4WD Adventure Tour on the 3rd day.

As we will be staying in the Preston Footprints Resort throughout the 7 nights, we really need help from the experts here to advise which are the places we should and is sensible to cover for the rest of the days before we fly back to Singapore

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi YorkFoodie and JeanPerth, thank you for the links and your great advice.

How time flies, we will be visiting WA in about three weeks' time, really looking forward to our holidays. Below is our revised itinerary.

Day 1 (14 Dec 2013, Saturday)

Arrive Perth International Airport at 6.20pm. Collect our rental car at airport and drive to our accommodation in Victoria Park.

Day 2 (15 Dec 2013, Sunday)

Fremantle Market. We would like to know if there is any cheap full day parking available, could someone please advise?

Day 3 (16 Dec 2013, Monday)

King's Park, Sorrento Quay

Day 4 (17 Dec 2013, Tuesday)

Join the full day Pinnacles, Koalas and Sand Boarding Tour.

The tour will depart from Wellington Street and we would like to know if there is any cheap full day parking nearby?

Day 5 (18 Dec 2013, Wednesday)

Swan Valley

Day 6 (19 Dec 2013, Thursday)

Margaret River, Busselton Jetty

Day 7 (20 Dec 2013, Friday)

Perth City, South Perth

Day 8 (21 Dec 2013, Saturday)

London Court, Hay Street Wall & Murray Street before catching our 7.30pm flight home.

Thank you.

Recommend that on Day 2 you fit in some time at Cottesloe Beach- great spot and teenagers should love it. Maybe late afternoon/early evening to see the sunset. You could enjoy a picnic on the lawn(supplies from Freo Markets) or fish and chips.

Here is a parking map for Fremantle:

Many people would park on Marine Terrace which is free.

If hot(likely)and you want to enjoy a swim then South Beach is a great area. Calm ocean and grassed areas.

Hope you are OK with the long drive there and back to Margaret River area. Not my idea of fun-get your kids out of bed early and leave say by 6 or 7 am so you are not driving back late at night. If only one driver then make sure that person has a nap before the return journey.

It is a pity you can't stay down that way (eg Busselton) on your final night then on last day drive back to airport.

If possible- Day 6 do Perth city things.

Day 7- drive south and stay down there then Day 8 drive back to Perth to fly out.

Hi JeanPerth,

Thanks for the parking map and recommendation.

It sounds great to have a picnic and seeing the sunset by the beach. Shall include Cottesloe Beach on Day 2 as you have suggested.

Yes, we will be leaving by 7am on Day 6 to Margaret River and will ensure hubby got enough rest before returning to Perth.

As for the last night, unfortunately we have already booked our accommodation, so shall not stay over in Busselton. Thanks for your suggestion.

I am wondering what it is you want to do that is specific to Margaret River region? Although it is an absolutely beautiful area there is no way on would want to be driving after dusk if I didn't absolutely have to. There is plenty to do closer to Perth city - Rockingham and Mandurah are an easy day trip drive. If you head south in the morning you will be in the opposite direction of peak hour traffic and likewise heading north in the afternoon. Sit on the beaches, enjoy a swim in calm waters and soak in the atmosphere!! Many cafes/restaurants/fish and chips in both places. Enjoy whatever you decide but please do not underestimate the very real risks of driving after dusk/before dawn.

Hi bacialicesprings, sorry for late reply.

After much consideration, we have decided to give Margaret River a miss.

On Day 6, we shall leave early and do Busselton - Mandurah - Rockingham.

We have a concern on the parking. Appreciate someone could advise on the following:

What is the difference between Lock 'n' Ride and Pay 'n' Display and how does it work?

Which are the train stations that have this facilities as we are planning to take the train to explore Perth for whole day.

Where is the best/cheap location to park our car on Day 4? We are staying in King George Street, Victoria Park and have to drive to Tourist Coach Rank in Wellington Street for our full day Pinnacles, Wildlife and Sand-boarding tour.

Thank you.

If you are going to Busselton, you are only 30 minutes from Margaret River... Time wise, it is much of a muchness...still too far and too much in one day to get proper enjoyment out of it...IMO

Hi PerthiteOZ, we know it is a long journey from Perth to Busselton, however we really do not want to give it a miss as we feel that it is a rare sight.

Busselton is a rare sight ?

Am now sitting pondering what I could have missed over so many years of driving through it in preference to get to MR!!
