Beer Prices

Just back from 10 days in Perth. I very much enjoyed your beautiful city. I knew about the $10-12 prices for beer but was happy to find wine by the glass at $7-10 in most bars/restaurants. Is it a taxation that makes beer a more expensive pour? Cheers!

Actually wine is taxed more heavily than beer. The cost of a beer over the bar compared to a glass of wine - you are not comparing apples with apples, glass size wise. An average serve of wine is usually 150ml. Depending on the venue, glass size can vary from 120 to 180ml.

This is the standard beer glass sizes in WA.

Shetland 115ml

Pony 140ml

Bobbie or Six (fl oz) 170ml

Glass 200ml

Middy or Half Pint 285ml

Schooner 425ml

Pint 570ml

So at $10 for your beer, (a pint?) you are actually getting significantly more alcohol than for your $7 wine.

This web site will help as it has pictures of the glasses and the differing names for each state in Aus.
