The time of sunrise and sunset, and the availability of petrol/fuel stations will depend very much on where in Australia you are.

Where do you plan on visiting?

Should we assume by Australia you mean Western Australia since you posted on the Perth forum?

We have a website called Fuelwatch which provides the daily cost of petrol, diesel and LPG for WA. Costs vary from region to region and day to day. At the moment the cycle in Perth is cheapest on a Wednesday, going up by at least 10c a litre on a Thursday and slowly down each day again until the cycle starts again the next Thursday. You can obtain 4c per litre discount vouchers from supermarkets when you purchase $30+ of groceries.

There are many service stations in the city. Variable for country driving depending where you go

Driving is safe enough in the city. Do not drive sunrise or sunset on country roads due to wildlife

Sunrise and sunset in Perth metropolitan area will be 6.00am - 6.30pm at the beginning of October, 5.30am - 7.00 pm end of November.

It is quite safe to drive along the east coast, and petrol stations are more frequent than in other parts of the country (but don't expect one every couple of kilometres, fill up regularly).

However, keep in mind it is over 3000km from Melbourne to Cairns, so you should only consider doing this as a road trip if you have at least 2-3 months. If your time is shorter you are better to fly between locations and then hire a car to look around.

Hi Mark

You would get better answers from local experts if you start your post again, but on the forum for your actual destination next time - like Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. (Perth is about 4,000 kms from Sydney, its a big country.)

Fuel costs range from about $1.45 to $1.60 per litre, depending what type, what day and where you buy it. So often its cheaper to fly big distances like Brisbane to Cairns. For a driving holiday also take into account that rental companies will charge you a big extra one-way fee for not bringing it back, just as they do in Europe.
