10D trip to perth with family of 4 + a 2yrs old toddler.

Dear all,

Me and hubbie are planning a trip to perth on 23/8-1/9 for our family and my in-laws. So thr will be a total of 4 adult and 1 toddler. We are planning to take a route from perth->Albany ->Margaret river-> perth again.

We hope to have at least 2 days for farm stay, explore vineyards, wineries, cheese/chocolate factory, and hopefully some fruit far, for fruit pickings.

Does anyone have any iti to share or recommendations? Will be doing self drive.

Thanks in advance

This topic has been discussed a _lot_lately as it seems half the population of Singapore will be descending on us at about the same time :-) Why don't you have a look through the Western Australia forums for the many recent threads full of info covering this topic already?

PS You will need to pre-book an infant car seat for your 2 year old and possibly booster seats for any older children. You cannot bring one from home.

Its great that so many visitors from Singapore find Perth to be an attractive place to come for a holiday - it looks like you have already been doing some research for your trip which will take you to some lovey places here. Three stops of 3 nights would be a fairly good way to do this journey.

The trip you are planning is mainly on good highways but you may be surprised in a few areas where the road may only be one lane in each direction, so plan your driving taking into account both the recommended times as well as the distances. With a small toddler you may need to stop a bit more often to let the child have a walk around - you dont want to imprison a 2 yr old strapped into a car seat for too long at a time unless they are sleeping, and its also better for you all to stop and stretch your legs.

Perth to Albany is fine to plan for the first day with at least one or two stops along the way. Its very rural scenery with cows and sheep and farms.

Albany to Margaret River is a scenic but winding road that will be narrow and among very tall trees in many places, picturesque but tiring for the driver. Get a good early start on the day.

Margaret River to Perth is a very popular route, with nice places along the way to stop like Busselton and Bunbury. The main highway after Bunbury has very few places to stop and refuel unless you turn right off the main highway, so refuel before you leave Bunbury to avoid detours on your way back to Perth.

Just to add to Kerry's comments. You are setting aside plenty of time to visit WA which is great as allows a more relaxed pace to enjoy what we have on offer.

For an itinerary I would suggest 2 days at the start in Perth/Fremantle as this time allows you to get over the journey and to see the main sights.

The trip to Albany along the Albany Hwy will take around 5 hours. Take snacks and you can then pull over on the quiet side roads if you want to enjoy the countryside. Also some excellent places to stop in Williams (The Woolshed is a pleasant cafe) and Kojonup (Black Cockatoo great cafe).

You could easily spend 3 nights in Albany. A heap of wonderful spots to head to-your toddler would enjoy Emu Point, great vistas from Wind Farm, Waleworld, Mt Adelaide, walk on boardwalk from Ellen Cove, Two People's Bay etc etc. Also on weekend there are two excellent markets.

I would then spend a day getting from Albany to Pemberton. Stop at pretty Denmark, drive along the Scotsdale Scenic Drive stopping at fabulous vineyards and tourist destinations.

http://www.denmark.com.au/

.Continue on and drop into William Bay and Tree Top walk. Maybe late afternoon by this stage so be careful on the drive from Walpole to Pemberton.

There are several farm stays at Pemberton which might suit. Check out reviews on TA. Spend a night or two.

Then onto Margaret River region. Can go via the lovely drive of Balingup/Nannup and get to Augusta which gets you to the wonderful region of Margaret River. Easy to spend another 3 days.

If you had an evening flight you could get back to Perth from Margaret River by leaving in the morning-it's around a 3 hour drive, though you might want to stop in Busselton/Mandurah.

You are coming at a time of the year when weather can be changeable. You will probably get some sunny days but be prepared in the southern coast for a bit of rain and chilly days-though who knows. Hopefully you will also get the start of the wildflowers.

It will be a little tiring IMO but if that's what you want to do...

Thoughts:

Be VERY careful driving into Albany after sunset. There are quite a lot of kangaroos that hang around on the highway ready to leap out in front of cars which will put a dent in your car, your wallet and your holiday mood.

I doubt you will fit in more than one or two of your day four activities after you feed the animals at your farmstay and before lunch. Plan to do more in the afternoon.

Who will babysit the 2 yo while you are at the casino? You can't take anyone under 18 in.

Are you looking for something specific at Harbortown you can't get at home? The shopping is cheaper and better in Singapore. Why not do something uniquely West Australian you can't do at home and which you've paid hundreds of dollars to get here to do/see?

Here are a few thoughts:

On your day getting to Fremantle, since you have a car swing by Cottesloe Beach as lovely spot-there's a playground suitable for toddlers. Maybe then drive around Peppermint Grove and river foreshore before getting to Fremantle.

In Fremantle the area around the Roundhouse is interesting. There's also several excellent museums and the Prison if that interests some of your group.

Strongly advise you get to Albany before dark to echo Yorkfoodie's comments. I would be aiming to get to Denmark by around 3 to have a little while exploring that pretty town. The Lower Denmark Rd into Albany is more scenic.

So many wonderful things to see and do in Albany:

Anzac memorial areas on Mt Clarence.

Drive around Mt Adelaide and see if you can spot any whales.

Put your toddler in a stroller and walk around the boardwalk from Ellen Cove (Middleton Beach) and the great coastline.

Emu Point-great spot for toddlers, boat harbor and pelicans.

On way to Whaleworld head to wind farm and have a short ( or long ) walk - magnificent coastal vista. I was there on the weekend and there were about 20 dolphins having fun surfing the waves!

The list goes on but that's my choice!

On way back to Perth stop at Kojonup and Williams. I like Black Cockatoo cafe in Kojonup for lunch. Park and toilets in Williams.

Kings Park in Perth- presume that is on your list?

Maxi taxi to airport is easiest.

Agree you are rushed with plenty if driving. Do factor in some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful natural environment.

Just a few more thoughts- definitely Kings Park on Day 1. Great walks, vistas and terrific playground for toddlers.

Given you are driving to southern spots I would suggest having another night in Albany on Day 8 to explore and have a break from driving. Then head back early Day 9. You will have time to rest up before heading out at night.

9. Re: 10D trip to perth with family of 4 + a 2yrs old toddler.

Thanks for the advice. Seems like I gotta give up the wonky windmill farm before we head to albany. If not we will definitely still be on the road whn ita dark. May I know the usual sunset timing in perth in aug? If not we will juz do feeding and check out then head straight to albany. In this case, I believe we can reach albany by 3pm if we depart at 10am. Ut suggestion for activity that we can do after we check in at albany? Prolly juz dinner and a stroll down somewhr relaxing?

For day 4, am juz worried that I wont be able to explore the winderies after the feeding session. Lunch at providore is like on the way. We are out after the feeding session prolly by 10am.

For the casino, its for my in laws. I eill stay in to take care of my girl or shop ard that area alone to past time. Lol.

Hi. For your trip from MR to Albany suggest you plan on taking the day and arrive in Albany by about 4.30. Sunset will be around 5.30ish.

There's plenty to see and do on that drive- some pretty towns to stop for a break then places such as the Tree Top Walk (near Walpole) and William Bay near Denmark are highly recommended .There are some winding sections between Pemberton and Denmark so take it easy.

When you arrive in Albany I suggest you drive around the town and drive around Mt Adelaide from Middleton Beach (your little one can have a play there) then if time permits go up to the Anzac heritage area and lookout. This route gives you a good overview of the town and coastline. The Visitor Centre is very close to your accommodation so pop in and get some maps.

Next day spend at Whaleworld, Wind farm plus Emu Point- good fresh fish and chips at the squid Shack.

Remember warm clothes are needed on the south coast-even end of August can be cold.
