Holiday rentals near train station

Hi all,

We are a group of 6 traveling n would like to seek opinion on various items. Please feel free to advise. Thanks in advance!

1. Which area is recommended as a base as we hope not to change accomodation frequently.

Purpose - near train station would be excellent. May rent car but not entire period

Like playground, BBQ at beach or park, rest n relax , farmers or local markets

Intend to go: Fremantle, penguin island, beach, kings park, subiaco sat farmers market, wildlife park, fruit farm if any (pls reconmend for sep to early oct period)

2. How much is transport from airport to Fremantle, if suggested accomodation in point 1

3. Accomodation to allow 6 pax, budget type so no luxury required

4. Rental of car off drive south to Margaret river.... I doubt I am Advanturous enough to reach Albany.

Thanks!

Hello!

If you plan to take public transport around Perth, then staying in Perth City would be your best bet. Our public transport system is centred around the city, so staying in the city would make transport much easier for you. However, there aren't many playgrounds or parks in the city, and I don't know of any public BBQs or farmers markets. I don't know of any farmers markets in Fremantle either, but there are some nice parks with BBQs near fishing boat harbour. Buses and trains to many places around Perth depart from Fremantle.

Budget accommodation is available at both Perth and Fremantle.

Except for expensive Cottosloe Beach, trains don't go within reasonable walking distance to a nice beach with accomodation. However, trains aren't the only source of frequent public transport around Perth. Buses serve some areas well. Don't limit yourself to areas around train stations. For example, Scarborough Beach is well served by buses and has nice parks and facilities, although it doesn't have a farmer's market. This hotel seems pretty cheap and has a good location, although it gets bad reviews:

Public from Perth Airport to Perth, Fremantle or Scarborough will be $4.40 per adult and $1.80 per child. If you want to take a taxi, you'll need to order a Maxi Taxi. Use a taxi fare estimator to calculate the taxi fare from Perth Airport to your destination. I don't know if a Maxi Taxi costs extra.

Fremantle could suit your purpose. Very good public transport, supermarkets, cafés and plenty of tourist attractions. There is a free CAT bus ( goes past train station) so even South Fremantle could work- nice beach front area with BBQ. River fairly close and plenty of parks near River.

Fremantle Markets Friday-Sunday and Growers Market on Sunday morning-best to have a car for this one.

Have a look at what is on offer on this web site:

…stayz.com.au/#searchResults/…

As already mentioned by DD, Cottesloe is fabulous but likely to be expensive.

Best to have a car to get to Penguin Island(can go on way to MR) and Caversham wildlife park.

Have a search through previous posts re fruit picking- not often done due to insurance issues.

There's a few car rental places in Fremantle- Bayswater seems to get good reviews. The region of Margaret River ( as against just the town) offers much for tourists. You really need at a minimum 2 nights there- ideally 3 nights. Read previous posts about this area as a heap if great suggestions have been given.

Next trip is Albany/Denmark/Walpole!

Another area to check out is Subiaco- on train line. Parks ( including Kings Park), shops, cafés and pleasant residential area. Need to drive or public transport to beaches.

Hi I think people have dismissed Cottesloe a little to quickly since there is the OBH back packers that offer inexpensive accommodation : http://obh.com.au/backpackers/ There website states rooms from 22.50 per night weekly which seems a good price. There is also that added advantage that you are right on the beach, near parks, bbq, shops and importantly probably about 10 - 15 min walk from the train station on the Fremantle train line, which means it's a pretty short trip to Fremantle. While there's no markets in Cottesloe there certainly is one in fremantle (http://fremantlemarkets.com.au/) and Subiaco (which is not far on the Fremantle train line too) . I did a quick search and there is also a car rental joint : cottesloe car a hire not far from the Cottesloe accommodation too with reasonable prices (from $24 per day). Alternatively there's other hire car business in Fremantle too choose from (Bayswater car hire $25 per day, and then thrifty, hertz, Avis and Eurocar ).

Fremantle itself is also another good choose to stay in, since there is a larger range of accommodation to choose from, train station is central and there's plenty of shops, markets, museums ect to visit there.

As for the price of transportation from the airport it all depends on how much you want to spend and the time of day you get in. Taxi is the easiest but will set you back up to $100 depending on the driver unfortunately, but around $70 seems about right. Alternatively there are buses from the airport to the city where you can catch the train line to most places you would need to get too. That is certainly the cheaper option.

If you do want to go down south to margaret river and that region just keep in mind it is a 3- 4 hour drive (280 km to margs) depending on what way you go so it is best the you stay the night down there. There is also heaps to see down that way so one day is rather inadequate so best spend at least 3 nights I reckon, that way you can check out all the wineries, breweries, beaches, national parks and various other attractions on offer.

I guess Cottelsoe wasn't mentioned because a 15 minute walk isn't exactly "near", especially as a group of six headed by "HappyMum" could well include small children or grandparents who might not be up to the walk. As well, if the weather was inclemently hot or wet, a 15 minute walk would be no fun at all.

Try the Duke's Apartments at http://www.dukesapartments.com/. They have apartments close to the train station, on the free Red CAT bus route. Great value 2 or 3 bedroom apartments that sleep up to 9 people from about $150 a night, sometimes lower. All modern, clean and secure.

Certainly hope the rental savings are worth the hassle of being miles from everywhere.

San Remo is Mandurah. You will need to drive into Mandurah for cafes and restaurants. Not far.

If you are planning to catch public transport some of the time, bus routes 558 and 584 serve San Remo.

Bus timetable for route 558: …wa.gov.au/timetablepdfs/…2020140720.pdf

Bus timetable for route 584: …wa.gov.au/timetablepdfs/…2020140302.pdf

Note that some route 587 services (displayed on the timetable above) "deviate via Meadow Springs shopping centre". These services are stop a short walk from San Remo.
