How to find campsites when traveling?

What's the best way to find campsites when traveling? Also, is it ok to drive up to them after-dark is it prohibited because I may wake up campers?

Most commercial camp sites (Camping Grounds) are well signposted; it's in the operators interests to make them easy to find. Department of Conservation (DOC) sites are mostly in National Parks and Conservation areas, and will be easy to find. You can look on the DOC web site for detailed information (www.doc.gov.nz). Freedom camping sites are not formal camping grounds, and will not be signposted, You just happen upon them.

I don't know of any restricdtion on ariving after dark, but I imagine you would cop a bit of flack from other campers if you started setting up camp, laughing and making a noise, when they were trying to sleep. As always, use common sense, and show some courtesy to other campers.

When we collected the campervan we were given an A5 book which lists campsites and activities by area.
