New Zealand in July 2009

We are hoping to go to NZ in July 2009 and want to know what temps to expect (we plan on seeing both islands). We aren't skiiers or winter sports people, but are going the scenery. Also, we are looking for an affordable escorted bus tour company to book the trip who will also book our airline flights from USA to NZ.

The entire country has changeable weather but July can be relied upon to be the coldest month. For many parts of the country this winter was terrible, with constant rain and low temperatures, while Wanaka enjoyed the driest, most mild winter in decades. Generally speaking you could have highs of 15C in the far North and 10C in the South. Overnight can drop to as low as -10C in some areas.

For a bus tour, have you approached the travel agents in Maryland? They are the best suited to obtain the best travel package for you from your home. A quick Google search shows there are quite a few bus tours available but I have no personal knowledge of any of them, so am unable to advise.

as WanakaLakes said you shouldn't be afraid to visit a local travel agent. Just do your research first and select one that's got some knowledge of the destination. Only agents in the USA are going to be able to source the best air deals and most large reputable tour companies pay commission so an agents rates won't be any more for the tour than going direct.

You will want to invest in a good quality rain jacket and some light hiking/trail shoes, preferably waterproof as well. It rains here a lot in July so preparation is going to be an important part of the journey.

Good time to visit though, very few tourists around and some parts of the country are arguably at there best e.g. the West Coast of the South Island.
