New Zealand snowfields?

I'm interested in planning a trip to NZ for the snow season.

Which snowfield is the best? That is, more lifts, larger area, better snow etc.

And how long does the snow season run?

Hi David

The ski season in Wanaka/Queenstown opened in June and usually runs through early to mid Oct. However this year they have enjoyed exceptional snow conditions and the season will probably run through the end of Oct.

Wanaka has a wonderful variety of skiing, with 4 ski fields and also the option of heli-skiing. If you're serious about skiing then Treble Cone would suit you... it has the longest ski run in the Southern Hemisphere.

On top of that Wanaka itself is a great place to stay, with a wonderful collection of bars, restaurants, cafes and many outdoor activities.

Come on over :)

Whakapapa and Turoa in the central North Island, just south of Taupo have the largest ski zone in NZ. The ski area of Mt Ruapehu covers 1,800 hectares of lift accessed terrain. Turoa has the longest lift in Australasia.

The season runs from June through until early November. Best months, July through till October.

Closest international airport is Auckland. Closest national airport, Taupo.

If you drive down from Auckland, it will take 4 hours to Taupo. Then around 90 minutes to Mt Ruapehu.
