Maori Experience

We want to experience the Maori culture. We will have two days at Rotarua and three days in the Bay of Islands. How do you compare Rotarua (Mital) with what is offered at Waitangi? Should

we do both, or would that be redundant?

Not sure about Waitangi but the Mitai Combo tour is well worthwhile.www.mitai.co.nz If you take the Combo tour you get transfers to & from your accommodation, waka (boat) arrival of Maori warriors, hangi dinner, cultural show, and a guided tour of Rainbow Springs Nature Park by night. This includes seeing the Kiwi, our nocturnal bird.

Well I don't know anything about Mitai but we participated in a hangi/dance evening in Queenstown which we enjoyed very much as we were a small group and there was a lot of inter-action.The Maori family who presented it all even sat and ate with us and then showed us their family treasures (pounamu).

We also went to Waitangi which is a completely different experience. The singing/dancing show takes place in a small theatre with raked seating. There was a little audience participation---men were selected to go on stage and join in with the Haka.

You don't really go to Waitangi for the show. It's a beautiful reserve and you learn a lot of history. You can see 35 metre Maori canoe and visit the Treaty House. There is also an audio visual show in the main building.

It's also a good place for souvenir shopping.
