Where to drive in North Is

Hi, we intend to spend our honey moon in NZ. We are having a blessing at a vineyard in the wairarapa (after a wedding in UK) and from there then want to travel North for about 1-2 weeks.

We want to see Napier as we like wine. Where is best from here? Towards Taupo or Gisbourne? Which is more recommended between Gisbourne and Taupo and what is there to do in Gisbourne?

We would also probably want to see Rotorua. Do we have time to go up the top of the North Island?

We may go to Waiheke for the day also.

Any advice on routes would be good but if we are leaving straight from Martinborough then we will head next to Napier I think and then????

Please let me know of any good accomodation too that is romantic.

one or two weeks???

It does depend on your time

My basic suggestion would be 2 nights Napier, 2 nights Taupo, one night Rotorua (only an hour from Taupo) 2 nights Kumeu or Muriwai or the Waitakeres (home of the best wines in New Zealand, not touristy or commercial) up the west coast (via the Kauri Coast and Tane Mahuta) to the Bay of Island for two nights then down the east coast to Auckland via Matakana.

Lots of wine, beaches and stunning scenery on the way.

Accommodation along the way can be just what you wish, cheap, expensive, stunning or basic.

If you can make a day for Waiheke Island, by all means enjoy this eco-paradise. It's so very different from the mainland, with its ecclectic mix of boutique award-winning wineries, cafes with outstanding views, beautiful beaches and bays, arts galleries, native bush, and a very laid back culture.

Fullers passenger ferries depart from downtown Ferry buildings in Auckland city regularly, or you can take your car over from Half Moon Bay in east Auckland. Lovely accommodation too - www.waihekenz.com Perfect for a honeymoon stay.
