The main sticking point might be the availability of one way rental cars from Nelson to Queenstown. How were you planning to get to Nelson? It might be easier to get a car in Picton.

If you love beaches the North Island in February is a great place to be. There are just so many beaches that could be recommended but unfortunately it sounds as if you have very limited time for travelling to them. It all comes down to being able to fit in what you consider to be highlights in a small timeframe.

Hi

Your present itinerary looks fine but does not provide for much in the way of beaches. You are really missing a lot in the North Island but with only a limited time you obviously have to make some choices.

If you want beaches without adding to your travel the you may wish to consider spending an extra day or two in Auckland where there are many beaches within easy reach. The west coast beaches such as Karekare and Piha are wild and very scenic whilst in the city itself you have Mission Bay, St Heliers or on the North Shore Chelteham and Takapuna beaches all close to restaurants and cafes etc.

Maybe you can persuade your friends to take you out and about or alternatively you may wish to consider taking a day trip out to the West Coast. Have a look at

There are a few nice beaches around Auckland, which are not really comparable to beach resorts overseas. I would say it is better to come to NZ to see things that are unique to our country and sights you won't easily find anywhere else in the world. Your intinerary looks good. Franz joseph glacier is spectacular. Although pricy, it is worth doing the heli hike to the top of the glacier and walking amounst the ice caves for 3 hours. i did it last year and will never forget it. The stunning scenery in Queenstown will more than make up for any beaches you dont manage to visit.
