need itinerary hiking suggestions

We are planning a 4 week trip to NZ in Feb and want to rent a car & camp and concentrate on doing some good hikes as well as seeing all the other sites. Is it best to fly from Auckland to south island then rent a car, then another car after we cross to the north island or take the same car ? Any suggestions on what hikes to do - day or hut ot hut ? Thanks

You have so many options - many rental car companies do not allow their cars on the ferry but will treat your booking as one for the application of discounts. The change of cars is pretty easy at the ferry terminals. Apex is one company that allows interisland transfers iirc.

To do the multi-day tramps you need more equipment (sleeping bags, cooking equipment and a strong pack) whereas for day walks you only need a day pack. The multi day tramps do offer great opportunities to really see the NZ backcountry if you are fit enough. I recommend the Routeburn and Abel Tasman as two very different "Great Walks" in the SI. In the NI you can try the Tongariro Crossing - a one day tramp or tackle the 3-4 day Tongariro Circuit.

If you decide to bring in camping equipment make sure it is thoroughly clean - especially the tent pegs must be free of soil & no grass-seeds on the floor. You may be asked to show it to Agriculture inspectors.

A fantastic time of year to visit! There are many walks throughout the country. For the best advice from locals visit the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre network as you travel. They provide impartial, free advice and can be found in all cities. newzealand.com/travel/…i-sites_home.cfm

In the North Island a good and easy hike to do is Alice Nash Memorial Heritage Lodge Track. It's easy to find, and is a gentle 45 minute walk each way. The hut is new and has excellent views. So, it's great for a picnic. Or, if you'd like to stay overnight you can. Just get a hut pass before you go at the i-SITE in Palmerston North. To explore further you can hike down to the river from the hut - 30-40minutes, and even go on a four hour hike to Iron Gate Hut. See www.irongates.co.nz This is an amazing part of New Zealand. Oh, and on the way to the hut you'll pass over a very picturesque arched wooden bridge, high above a narrow gorge in Umuoi Creek.

Enjoy your planning!
