Safety - Selfdrive from sep9th to 26th

Hi everyone,

Terrible to hear of the devastation from the quake. We have a self drive itinerary confirmed from Christchurch for the South Island tour for sep9th to 26th. Our tour operator recommends going ahead with the plans but we need a second opinion on whether its safe to proceed?

Especially after reports of the storm and heavy rains.

Any advice on this will be appreciated. Need to confirm or cancel the flights by tonight.

Thanks!

SR

You will have no worries at all rsree, please don't cancel your flights. The only problem you may have is if you are staying in the city centre of Christchurch and then I'd check with your accommodation provider. In some places motel/hotelss on one side of the road are fine while on the other they may have some structual damage or no water. There may be some main roads out of the city that will have small diversions but frankly unless you go looking you'll not notice anything different. This quake was very random with it's victims, in some cases whole suburbs affected and in others nothing showing at all. Once you leave Christchurch it'll be business as usal. And storms and heavy rain are every day happenings at this time of the year. But you're just as likely to get brilliant sunny days and warm temperatures like it was in Christchurch this past two days.

Welcome to the forum R :)

While parts of Christchurch are battered at the moment, the rest of the island is unscathed. And down here in Wanaka we had neither heavy storm, nor rain.

So come on down :)

Hi Guys!

Thank you both for the prompt responses!

We were worried seeing reports of State Highways being flooded and concerned about driving through when there are heavy rains. Just tensed on whether we may encounter unforeseen problems due to rains on the route. Plus feeling hesitant about holidaying when everyone there is battling with problems after the quake. Gosh! To go or not to go??????? We dont even know if our flights from Singapore will take off as scheduled. Currently all flights to christchurch are rescheduled.

See this-

"Wind and rain have also caused havoc in the South Island, with heavy rain forecast for Fiordland and the Southern Alps as already swollen rivers and streams threatened to burst their banks.State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound was closed by flooding."

Heavy rain is common in Fiordland, it is one of the wettest spots on the planet. And the Milford Road often suffers due to the weather, with snow possible in summer and rain storms throughout the year. Which is why we often suggest a bus tour to Milford makes for a more relaxing visit.

But the entire South Island isn't under water :)

And even if you come across flooding you won't be driving through it! You'll be diverted. Flooding on any main roads only lasts for a day or two anyway. Christchurch airpoet suffered no damage and was only shut in the immediate aftermath so it could be checked. Planes started flying again within hours. You really should not be worried, this will only make you more stressed than you obviously already are.

Hi guys

The worry is because news seems to one have one scary report after another with the latest being warning of another powerful quake in the next week?

But I think we are going ahead and coming down!

Thanks!

:) 4 million of us live with that threat every day, do you see any of us not living life to the full. Surely you know how the media work, scare tactics make good news. There's always a possibility of a big quake, up until this latest one I bet every tourist that visited our shores never gave it a second thought. You will be fine, try not to worry. And stop watching the news!! :)

Well said Zappers and WL. You have to put it all in perspective. Good news doesn't sell papers, does it? Looking forward to our visit on the 19th September. Hopefuly a few tourist dollars will help local businesses. Stay positive everyone!
