Is the diving decent in New Zealand

we will be in Auckland in February and we're trying to decide if it's worth diving in New Zealand or not worth the time. Also, If we don't dive there, we can take a side trip to either Fiji or Australia for maybe 3 days. Which is the easiest access to great diving. I've heard that it takes several hours in a boat to access the great barrier reef and given our tight time frame we don't want to spend so much time to get to a reef. Your thoughts greatly appreciated

check diving at Tutakaka. It is renowned as being some of the best diving in the world at the Poor knight islands.

I have not dived there now for about 35 years or so, but it is hard to beat bubble caves, 100 foot plus viz and abundeant sea life as it is also an underwater sanctury. rikoriko cave is a huge cave that the dive boat can go into and still have 40 ft water under it.

Fiji or Australia are hardly a "side trip", they're destinations in their own right and would require more than a quick 3 day trip. Poor Knights is one of the best dive sites in the world(as Coaster says), check out Dive Tutukaka-

The Poor Knights offers remarkable water clarity and abndance of subtropical species. Given that it has world class status, and recently listed as one of the top ten diving attractions in the world for its class, I doubt the effort to visit this offshore marine reserve wil let you down.

The journey from Auckland to Tutukaka will take around2.5 - 3 hours driving time. Various dive operators available in Tutukaka, on Northland's east coast.

If you dont have time to reach Tutukaka (known to the locals as "Toots"), then perhaps a visit to the Goat Island marine reserve in Leigh will support your interests; albeit on a minute scale compared to the magnificence of the Poor Knights group.

Definitely worth heading to Tutukaka and taking a trip out to the Poor Knights - the diving has been great so far this season - all our guests at our B&B have been raving about it. (the weather for spring/early summer has been generally great aswell)

Its a 45 minute boat trip from Tutukaka to the poor Knights - there are several companies that operate dive charters - can give you more detailled info if you want...

Tutukaka coast itself has been voted equal 2nd best coastline in the world by National Geographic, and also has had some great publicity recently with the amazing pictures of the surfing orca at Sandy Bay !!

During our visit in May this year my husband enjoyed diving at Poor Knights, Marlborough Sound from Picton and Milford Sound. He enjoyed all 3 but as a lone diver he was a bit resticted in what he could do at Milford Sound due to inexperience of other divers.

One thing to bear in mind is that if you want to be comfortable South Island diving is dry suit temperature.

Thanks for the information. Do you have a B&B in that area?

We stayed in excellent self catering accommodation in Tutukaka. It was called No10. It was a short walk to restaurants, bars and the dive shop.

If you look on www.bookabach.co.nz you should find it you should find it.
