2 Weeks New Zealand - February or March 2012

We are planning a 2- week vacation to NZ in February or March (would one month be better than the other?) next year. Leaving Denver on a Saturday and leaving NZ to return in Denver on Saturday two weeks later. My husband and I are reasonably fit, in our early 60's, and the focus of our trip will be to enjoy NZ and its people and spend 5 or 6 separate days doing easy to moderate (5 to 8 miles) day hikes with sightseeing in between those hikes. We would not be doing other activities, such as kayaking, etc. We would rent a car for most or all of the trip, unless public transport made more sense for part of the trip. Budget to moderately priced B&B's would probably give us the best chance to meet local folks, but smaller or medium size hotels would be fine as well.

We would love to have your suggestions for an itinerary given the above. Given this much time, would we be better off sampling both islands or just sticking to the south island? Thank you so much for your help! This is a great forum, and perhaps one day we'll be able to help others looking for travel advice!

Hi..we are also a couple in our 60s who will be going to New Zealand for about a month in March 2012 to mostly hike, drink good wine and sightsee..we are planning on spending about 10 days on the North Island and 20 days or so on the South Island.. I feel that we need that much time to really enjoy, instead of rush to the next town or hike...See you there...Enjoy

February or March, not alot of difference.

If you are in to hiking look at the Tongariro Crossing, one of the best, if not THE BEST in the world. This is in the centre of the North Island, but there are so many walks and hikes throughout New Zealand. One could go to the Bay of Islands or Coromandel and stay 2 weeks and still not see half the sights or experience half the hikes or walks.

Wineries are everywhere from Waiheke, home of the overpriced yuppie ones, to West Auckland/ Kumeu where the old original vineyards and wineries can be found. Then there is Hawkes Bay, Martinborough, and into the South Island and Marlborough.

Unfortunately 2 weeks is not long enough but one must do the best with the time that they have.

Best of luck in your planning.

welcome to the forum B&G :)

Feb and March are both excellent months to tour NZ. With under two weeks to explore, you are best to stick to the South Island.

you could;

Mon arrive Auckland, fly to Christchurch

Tues explore

Wed drive to Punakaiki

Thu drive to Franz Josef, explore glaciers, hike

Fri drive to Wanaka :)

Sat explore, hike

Sun drive to Te Anau, hike, glow worm caves

Mon cruise Milford Sound, stay Te Anau

Tue drive to Queenstown

Wed explore, hike, TSS Earnslaw

Thu drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook, explore, hike

Friday drive to Chch

Sat fly home

www.newzealand.com has great B&B listings

hope this helps :)

One more thing about accommodations -- don't be afraid to try a hostel.

My husband and I (also in our 60s) just returned from a 3+ week NZ trip, and in addition to B&Bs, motels, etc., we tried 3 hostels (all private room with ensuite). They varied in comfort and experience -- none bad -- and I'd highly recommend the YHA hostel in Te Anau. Our room, though small, was more functional than some of the motels where we stayed. Good bathroom. Very clean. The bonus -- you save money.
