Wellington??

We are a family of 5 adults visiting NZ over Christmas 2011. We fly into Wellington for 2 days then fly to Picton to walk the Queen Charlotte Track. Any suggestions of how to spend Christmas in Wellington?? And accommodation suggestions on the track? Maybe even somewhere nice, by the beach/water for lunch on christmas day?

Thanks

If the day is noce and warm you could do a lot worse than a walk around the Bays. Te Papa museum a must see when in the Capital is open on Christmas Day and that could be an option. Generally like most other places in the country the city is closed on Christmas day. Most restaurants are closed but the larger ones and thus more expensive generally have some sort of lunch available during the Day but prepared to pay a premium. Most of the major hotels in the CIty will have Christmas luch on, As with all restaurants and hotels you will need to book for Christmas lunch.

Accomodation in Wellington ranges from 3 star to 5 star so some indication of requirements would be helpful. All types can be within easy walk to Oriental Bay and most will have in house dining

Bean, will the ferries to Matiu/Soames Is be running on Christmas Day? That could be fun with kids & a picnic. http://eastbywest.co.nz/timetables/

Zealandia (open every day EXCEPT C Day) is another recommended activity with children: visitzealandia.com/Site/…Default.aspx

Hi, check with them on info@eastbywest.co.nz but I'd be very surprised if they run on xmas day. People who'd use it for transport would need to get the bus that day.

The bus network run a service so you will have some transport running. If I were you because it is so quiet I would hire a car so you can still get around when it suits you rather than wait for weekend/Sunday timetabled public transport. If it was a sunny day you could take BBQ food to the parks with BBQs (coin operated) for your picnic! There is one at Island Bay beach's park for instance.

Beware the supermarkets closing xmas day so stock up in advance day before. Some restaurants, fast food and dairy and petrol stations will still be open. Everything else closed for the day.

I know that Cobar Restaurant in Days Bay has been open on Christmas Day previous years. This restaurant is in a stunning location overlooking the sea. Their website is www.cobar.co.nz. You would need to book very soon for Christmas Day.

As others have suggested, if the weather is right you could take a picnic and enjoy one of the many fabulous outdoor locations in and near the city.
