July 9 days; want to try east coast, see snow & hot pools!

Right, kids 7 & 10 want to see snow & throw snow balls (not enough time to learn to ski I feel), trying book-a-back, have small camper van booked & looking at Turangi as there is Tokaanu hot pools not far.

But where is the best place to see/touch snow, we don't have any in Adelaide...

Any info on east cape? Morere hot springs is closed due to flood damage, any info on Te Puia anyone?

and thanks for the old posts about the highway Taupo-Napier, very helpful!

:)

You wont get snow on the East Cape but it is definitely worth doing a drive around. We stayed last week at Te Puia Hot Springs Hotel and it was absolutely lovely!! Yes, it does have a hot spring pool too.

Best bet to experience snow is the Whakapapa or the Turoa ski fields on Mt Ruapehu. The road is sealed up to the fields, so you can drive up (although you may need chains), or there are shuttles.

You can hire toboggans on the mountain. I know you said you won't have time to learn to ski, but if you are spending the day up the mountain, you could have an introductory lesson. You're not going to be good enough to wizz down the black runs, but you will be able to stop, control your speed and turn at the end of the day. The ski fields offer quite good packages for beginner skiers.

You can also hire clothing as well.

Whakapapa has a free chairlift down to Happy Valley - the beginners slopes, where the toboggan hire is located so you get extra value there. The road is in excellent condition or you take a shuttle bus if there is fresh snow on the road. It is an easy drive from Turangi.

Don't under estimate your children and their ability to learn even with one day tuition, they will Be asking for more.

They have the ability to make older novice skiers feel totally inadequate as they zip down the slopes fearlessly.

If two days are possible, then go for it.

As for east cape, it is a beautiful part of the country, which has not been affected by tourism as we know it. It is a grass roots experience and the locals are wonderful. Some beautiful beaches and the first region in the world to see the dawn of each new day.

There are several hot pools in and around Taupo and Rotorua. With a camper you can stay at Waikite Hot Pools. This camping ground has a restaurant and pools at varying temperatures. www.hotpools.co.nz is a website to check out.

You will find snow at National Park in the centre of the North Island. At this time of the year there is usually plenty of snow at the side of the roads through the park and kids can make and throw snowballs without the cost of going to Turoa or Whakapapa skifields.

It takes two/ three days for a sightseeing journey around the East Cape so if your time in NZ is short, maybe you will find more than enough to do and see in the central North Island.
