Wont see much.

4 or 5 days Auckland to Wellington via maybe one area (Rotorua/Taupo perhaps), cross on the ferry, then 5 days north of the South island, ending in Christchurch. Any further south and its just a non stop one way drive with limited activity time.

Welcome to the forum N :)

Unfortunately 10 days just won't do it. It takes a minimum of three weeks to see the highlights of both islands. With just 10 days to explore you are best to concentrate on one half of one island.

With the Rugby World Cup on, everything will be heavily booked so you are best to book your flights, accommodation, rental car and as much of everything else you can, right now.

Best of luck :)

With 10 days you will just not have enough time to do what your are thinking of.

If you fly into Auckland and work on spending 5 days in north island and 5 in the south you could just have time to get a glimps of the Auckland Region and either central north island (Rotorua/Taupo) or the Auckland Region and Bay of Islands, but not both.

You would need to fly to south island (say from Rotorua) and the fly out from the south island.

However you would do much better to focus on one island.

I would suggest that you take a look at the rugby world cup match schedule which you can find at:

rugbyworldcup.com/mm/…2041707_PDF.pdf

and plan your travels to avoid the match locations (unless you want to get caught up in the cup atmosphere etc) and in particular the main centres such as Auckland and Wellington.

September and October are going to be very busy months with pressure on rental vehicles, accommodation etc - you will need to get organised without delay.
