One week in New Zealand in January - where should we go???

My fiance and I will be honeymooning in Australia and New Zealand in January. We plan on spending a week in New Zealand and are stumped on where we should spend our time with so many amazing things to do! We will be flying in from Cairns and need to fly back to Sydney. We've heard amazing things about Queenstown, but aren't sure how long to stay there...we're not the most adventurous people in terms of bungies/luges/swing, but we love a good wine tasting and pretty gardens. We also love a good beach. Any suggestions? We're particularly curious about Auckland and Christchurch.

The best of NZ is well outside the cities IMO, and Christchurch and Auckland are definitely cities. Which city will you be flying into?

A week isn't much time for NZ and attractions are so spread out that it's difficult to use the base city/day trip option. One exception to that is Queenstown though....there's plenty in the vicinity to fill a week. Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wanaka...all relatively easy from QT. Loads to do in the area w/o having to throw yourself off a bridge too - some fab wineries (check out Cromwell), walking tracks, pubs, restaurants, casinos, lake activities, jet boat rides...I highly recommend the Dart River Safari out of Glenorchy - beautiful and fun.

The Abel Tasman area (north SI) has wonderful beaches AND nice wineries nearby in Blenheim. The Marlborough Sounds are gorgeous too. Loads to do really, endless options.

Asking that question is like asking "Should I marry this person?" It depends on what you want from life.

But if you absolutely insist on advice go to the South island. Fly in Christchurch, hire a car and do a loop over the Southern Alps to the West Coast then down through the Haast Pass to Wanaka and Queenstown. Out to Milford Sound maybe across to Dunedin - for the gardens - if you can fit it in, otherwise head north through the centre of the island on State Highway 8 through Mt Cook and Tekapo.

There are fine wineries in the Queenstown and Central Otago area. A North Otago winery has just taken out a major wine award.

Gardens are everywhere. Go to http://www.gardenstovisit.co.nz/ for ideas.

I can't believe as a North Islander I'm going to say this : if you only have a week then go to Queenstown South Island.

You will already have enjoyed beaches and hot temps in Cairns so you could do the winery/scenic thing as suggested in above two posts.

January will be lovely summer temps in the South Island!

The north at the east coast of Coromandel, not that far from Auckland, has some nice beaches n pretty good for honeymooners.

But if u only have a week, go south.

Welcome to TA and the New Zealand Forum.

With regard to Auckland:

New Zealand is not a destination that one comes to for our cities and Auckland is no exception with the best to be found in the surrounding area where you will find everything you are looking for – wineries, gardens and beaches all within an hour of the city centre and airport. Areas you may wish to look into further are the Waitakere Ranges to the west of the city, Waiheke Island and a bit further afield the Matakana area to the north east

For an overview of Auckland have a look at:

www.aucklandnz.com

Be aware that January is our peak domestic holiday season and beach locations in particular will be busy.
