Cell phone rentals

What is the most affordable way to access cell phones in NZ? We are coming from US; a group of 11 that thinks schedule flexibility will be improved if we can use 3-4 cell phones to check in. Is there an affordable pay-as-you-go service? what costs should we expect?

Suggest you go to The Warehouse (right near Auckland Int'l airport) and buy cheap mobile phone (NZD50 - 70.00). Then buy 2Degrees SIM card. The phone/card top-ups (pay as you go) can be bought at supermarkets (grocery stores), corner stores (7/11s), and service stations (gas stations).

2Degrees is one of the cheapest pay as you go mobile phone services in NZ.

I agree with above - actually handsets and 2 degrees SIM card can be bought as cheaply as $50, and the pay as you go top up can either be bought at most stores or can be set up to be done on the handset via your credit card.

As these handsets and SIMs can be bought so cheaply now, rental of cellphones is pretty much obselete.

Warehouse Stationery (which is in the shopping centre as you exit Auckland Airport) have a phone & SIM card pack for $59

These deals are also available at electronics stores like Dick Smith so very easy to find. Phones & deals vary between $49 & $99. The SIM card is included as is $5 credit.

However if any of the group have unlocked cell phones you can just pay the $5 for the SIM card.

CC = Christchurch?

Same as for Auckland: The Warehouse, Dick Smith Electronics, Noel Leeming etc for the full pack, including a basic phone or just about any dairy (corner store), service station, supermarket etc for the SIM cards.

We rented a cell phone along with our car (APEX) on our 2010 trip. Not a great deal, but easy to arrange. Now, I just noticed that Amazon sells unlocked GSM phones (NZ Standard) for about $30-40 US. Comparable to NZ prices it seems. I think we'll go ahead and try one of these for our upcoming trip in March, pick up a SIM card on arrival and go. Should save some shopping time on arrival. Will post my experience upon return.
