Stopover on Overlander train journey

We are planning to travel on the Overlander from Auckland to Wellington in July and we are planning to stop over somewhere enroute for one night...can anyone suggest a stop? We're just planning a relaxing day so we don't need somewhere with a lot of tours or activities available - just a nice town to explore, or some lovely views..?

National Park would be the obvious 'halfway-ish' stop off, and is a stunning area of countryside, mountains, great walking tracks etc

If you get off her you could stay at the 'iconic' Chateau Tongariro (15 mins in taxi from station), or several other accommodation options in the village itself (walking dist from station)

Ohakune could work equally well and is a bit more of a major town with cafes and shops etc
