Campervan and Campsites

Hiya,

If we hired a campervan for a week (i know its not a long time, but its all the time we have, so will see a little on this trip and hopefully come back!) can we just park it anywhere and stay the night or is it better to stay in campsites?

Thanks!

Doc campgrounds are also great but without knowing where you plan to travel it is hard to recommend a specific campground.

The fine for illegal camping is $200 and it is strictly enforced in many areas.

Watch out down there in Te Anau - a while back illegal campers were given the option of going to court or doing community service. They chose CS and spent the next three hours cleaning up piles of human waste from places around town where illegal campers had parked and dropped.

Thanks for your replies, as we only have a week we plan to head north towards the Bay of Islands for around 4 - 5 days and then on the 5th day head to Rotarua and come back to Auckland on the 7th day, flying out on the 8th day. We want to see as much as possible but don't want to spend all our time driving. Is their somewhere up around the Bay of Islands to stay that is pretty central to a whole host of things? Scenery is probably the most important thing, a bit of walking, and food!

Thanks Katie

Stay away from Paihia----soooo commercialized!...stay on th move every night to another deluxe campground!! Matauri Bay north of Kerikeri...then Tauranga Bay a bit further north...maybe Whangaruru North camp before/after...that's the way to see the Bay of Islands in a campervan!! cheers, scott
