What to take?

Hi,

My wife and i are off to NZ in Jan /Feb 2013 for a 24 day fly drive of both the north and south island. We are flying with Singapore airlines and have only been given a 20Kg luggage allowance each, for a 4 week trip. What will we need to take with us ?

Thanks in advance.... Mick.

Hi

You will be coming to New Zealand when our weather should be at its best.

However the weather is changeable here and it would be prudent to come with a light fleece. There is a noticeable drop in temperature when the sun goes down or behind a cloud. Also it would pay to come with something light and waterproof in case of a shower.

The following sites are very informative:

Thank you lonekaurilodge, those websites will be a great help. Will we need walking boots for a trip up the fraz Joseph glacier, or will good shoes do?

Regards Mick

If you go onto the ice your guides will provide boots which can be fitted with crampons, also provided.

If doing other hikes you might want your walking boots. if so just wear them on the plane to save luggage weight. You will need to ensure your boots and all other footwear is free of mud, dirt and seeds as they will be inspected on arrival and steam cleaned if necessary.

Happy packing :)

20 Kg is normal these days for international flights in economy ;-( We do have laundries in NZ and we are not formal dressers. Don't forget your swimmers for hot springs & even the beach. Think layers, including a wonderfully light merino top which you can buy in NZ and take home as a souvenir!! Keep the shoes to a minimum (eg one pr sandals & one pr walking shoes).
