Suggestions for travel routes??

We are traveling in mid-July and would like to take the most scenic routes when traveling from one place to the next. I was given a couple of suggestions to some of the places....which you can see below. Does anyone else want to add to those suggestions or have any other suggestions on which roads we should take when traveling to these locations?

1. AUCKLAND to WAITOMO

From Auckland take State Highway 1 south towards Hamilton BUT turn off at the BP service station just past Ngaruawahia onto SH39, signposted Otorohanga (the coffee is good at the Wild Bean Cafe). Follow this all the way to the junction with SH3, opposite McDonalds, in Otorohanga. This route avoids driving through Hamilton, is shorter, about 30 minutes quicker and a nicer drive anyway.

2. WAITOMO to TAUPO

If you are driving into Taupo using SH30 (Whakamaru) and then SH1, you could visit Orakei Korako thermal area (includes short jet boat ride) located off SH1 towards Taupo.

3. TAUPO to WELLINGTON

4. CHRISTCHURCH to LAKE TEKAPO

5. LAKE TEKAPO to MT. COOK to LAKE WANAKA

6. LAKE WANAKA to TE ANAU

7. TE ANAU to QUEENSTOWN

5 there is only one road, you have no other options. The side road to/from Aoraki/Mt Cook is gorgeous.

6 You can take the Crown Range (60 minutes to Queenstown) which is NZ's highest public road. In July it can be icy, especially early morning. Or take the less hilly option via Cromwell (90 minutes), passing many boutique vineyards and Kawarau Bridge where they bungee. Both routes are very scenic - you won't be disappointed with either.

7 just the one road, back along the same road you took to get there.

NZ roads are very well signposted but it's always a good idea to acquaint yourself with a road map both while planning a trip and also while driving - a road map will be provided with your rental vehicle.

Safe travels :)

Hello

The proposed route from Auckland to Waitomo is definitely the way to go. You could also consider turning off SH1 further north around Tuakau and go down SH22. This will take you through some nice rural countryside but be aware that this road and the road on down to Otoroghanga is bendy - but then so are most roads in NZ.

I usually go to Wellington from via Taupo and then Napier. The Taupo Napier Highway (Highway in name only) is a very pleasant drive and take a moment to stop at the Waipunga Lookout (clearly sign posted).

In July you may find roads closed or icy particularly in the south island but the also the Taupo Napier Highway can be closed due to snow, If you tune into the radio (Radio New Zealand National) main road closures are usually mentioned - or just ask the locals or in an i site (visitor offices in many towns)

I always use and recommend and use Google Maps for route planning.

www.maps.google.co.nz

Be aware though that the times are basic driving times and can be as much as doubled to allow for stops etc

3. TAUPO to WELLINGTON.

The shortest route is using SH1 all the way. But the Desert Road (Turangi to Waiouru section) has closed overnight/part of a day this month already, due to heavy snowfall and strong winds.

When you reach Taupo, check with the I-site information centre, or your accommodation hosts whether the Desert Road is open. The large Z petrol-station in Turangi (south of Taupo) will also know.

The journey between Taupo and Wellington will take about 5 hours - www.aatravel.co.nz/main/td-calculator.php

Several choices Chch to Tekapo:

1. The simplest is to take SH 1 (straight road, rather boring) through Rakaia & Ashburton to Orari, where there is a large signpost to Aoraki/Mt Cook via Geraldine. Once you get to Geraldine there is no choice but SH 79 to Fairlie.

2. The Inland Scenic Route: head west on SH 73 and turn south at Darfield. Big signposts, SH 72/Inland Scenic Route. Eventually you reach Geraldine & the route is the same as #1 through to Tekapo.

After Tekapo if the weather is nice, I strongly recommend taking the right turn about 10 Km south of Tekapo signposted "Mt Cook Salmon Farm". Stunning views & a very easy drive. You come out by the Pukaki penstocks & follow the lake shore for a while.
