Hi Stu :)

You have a fairly punishing schedule in a relatively slow moving campervan - I think you will end up spending far more time behind the wheel, getting places, than you anticipate.

My suggestion, drive down the West Coast instead of zig-zagging back and forward. Also when do you arrive in NZ - if it is day one then please don't drive on arrival in NZ. Driving jet lagged is the same as driving drunk, it kills.

best to take the ferry during the day to enjoy arrival at the South Island in daylight to ensure you don't miss the lovely scenery.

so your trip would be;

5 drive to Abel Tasman

6 explore

7 kayak

8 drive to Punakaiki

9 drive to Franz

10 drive to Wanaka

11 drive to Te Anau

12 drive to Milford

13 kayak

14 drive to Queenstown

15 explore

16 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

17 explore

18 drive to Chch

19 fly out

If really keen to get to Kaikoura then go;

16 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

17 drive to Chch

18 day trip to Kaikoura, stay Chch

19 fly out

hope this helps :)

With day 2, why don't you go directly from Waitomo to Whakapapa? Just spending a few hours in Rotorua means you won't really see very much, and if your interests are more in outdoor activities, then you should maximise your time in Tongariro National Park.

Also, the South Island looks a bit rushed to me, although there are people better qualified to comment on specifics. There are a couple of things that stick out though. One is Queenstown through to Christchurch in a campervan is a fairly long haul in one day. The other is day 8, Abel Tasman to Blenheim - unless you particularly want to stay in Blenheim, why not drive through to Kaikoura?

One other thing you might not be aware of is the public holiday weekend in October. Labour Day is celebrated on 22 October, and many Kiwis go away at this time, so it could be worth booking your campsites for that weekend. Roads near major cities can be congested at this time too.

How late in October are you arriving? Too early and the TC may not be open; too late and Whakapapa will almost certainly be closed. (BTW do you realise how expensive skiing is - you cannot get a lift pass & hire gear just for 1 hour, which seems to be all the time you have. You'd barely get one run in in one hour.)
