car rental companies

My husband and I are traveling to NZ in Feb.-Mar. '13 and are flying into Wellington, then ferrying to S. Island, exploring for several days, then flying from Dunedin to Rotarura and exploring the North Island. We need to find a reliable and economical car rental company that allows to drop a car in a different city seamlessly. Also, it makes sense to pick up the car after our ferry ride but then we'd have to rely on public transportation from the airport to our B&B and while in Wellington. Any advise?

I would normally suggest APEX, but they don't have a depot in Dunedin or Rotorua, so they wouldn't work for the locations that you need.

You would probably be best advised to do the interislander ferry as foot passengers and pick up your south island rental car in Picton. Quite a number of rental companies don't allow their cars on the ferry anyway.

It is easy enough to taxi/bus from Wellington airport to where you are staying, and then to the ferry terminal.

I would suggest ACE as the next option for the south island (http://www.acerentalcars.co.nz/), they have depots in Picton & Dunedin.

For the north island, starting in Rotorua, maybe look at NZ Rent a Car

You could use NZ rent a car for both islands as they have depots everywhere you need.

I used Ace a couple of months ago. Thought they were very good.
