Trapped on Milford Track

Gales and heavy rain have closed the Milford Track for the second time in just over a week, trapping 89 trampers, including children, in three huts.

The track also closed on New Year's Day, stranding more than 100 trampers for two nights.

The rain in the Clinton Valley had been intense with the river level rising from near normal to above the flood threshold within five hours today, resulting in the Clinton River bursting its bank.

Yet another reason why travel insurance is a must - it will cover you for missed connections, missed flights and possible helicopter rescues from swollen rivers.

--- the other night on a local TV show - High Country Rescue - some overseas hikers were lifted off a remote location by helicopter (they had set off their emergency beacon) but their packs containing all their clothes, money and passports were left on the mountain.

Thanks for the link WL...I didn't know it was quite that bad down there! yikes! What will the sandflies eat if it keeps up the rain?

Here in Nelson we have been basking in hot and dry temps for several months - with record breaking temps.

We have drizzle today but proper rain is needed - we will gladly take a few hours of West Coast rain... then it can drift over to put out the fires in poor Oz.

Yow, we are booked for the second week in March. Hope the weather calms down a bit before then, or we may have more of an adventure than we were planning for!

Nelson finally has some proper rain. I hope the wet areas can dry out.

Best of luck for your walk Nan - it (hopefully) can't rain forever :)
