Napier to Wellington

We are travelling from Napier to Wellington.Can anyone recommend the best route/most scenic to take as there are obviously two routes to choose from?

Following SH2 down all the way to Wellington is probably more interesting. Possible stops include Pukaha Mt Bruce, a wildlife sanctuary where you can see various native birds including kiwi, and the small Wairarapa towns of Greytown, Carterton and Martinborough, which have some nice shops and cafes. Martinborough is a bit off the highway, but it's popular due to being a wine-growing centre.
