Buying camping gear in New Zealand

Hi All!

We plan a 2 months trip in New Zealand in March-April, which will include a lot of tracking. We need to buy some traveling gear like sleeping bags, thermal clothing, etc.. :

1. Is it expensive to buy equipment in NZ?

2. Can we bring our own tent or must we buy one in NZ?

Thanks,

Yosi

Camping gear readily available in NZ. I dont know what the costs are like compared to your country but NZers are outdoors people. Plenty of range in gear and prices from cheap tents at $39 to top world class mountaineering tents.

Four options as I see it:

1. Obviously bringing your own is cheapest, if you already have the gear. Note that tents & hiking boots must be spotlessly clean & free of soil & grass seeds etc. Biosecurity will want to check them at the airport. You can't carry gas bottles on the plane of course!

2. Buy second hand in NZ from a shop like Cash Converters or online from trademe.co.nz! May take time - only worht doingif you are here for a month or three.

3. Buy cheap gear new from The Warehouse (aka the Big Red Shed). It should last a month, but tents should be treated with waterproofing product before use.

4. Buy from proper outdoor equipment shops like Mountain Designs, BaseCamp or Kathmandu where you can get advice on what you will need.
